Egg Carton padding vs. high end stuff
Our band is trying to build an isolation booth for vocals on a small budget. Has anyone used those egg carton pads (like the ones for beds) to deaden a room? Do they work at all or do they make recordings sound like sh*t? Thanks for any responses.

Whitesnake, anyone?
Sounds like shit, burns like gasoline. Auralex may also sound like shit, but at least it doesn't burn.
At the no budget price point, I would recomend carpet remnants, sprayed with fire retardant. If you hang multiple layers, you might be happy with the results.

Does anyone know where to get spray fire retardant? I've been looking around and nobody seems to have any idea what I'm talking about

(A) You need OPEN celled foam for audio absorption. Most mattress pad stuff is closed cell.
Auralex is pretty cheap for the most part and does a pretty good job...
(B) Any theatrical supply will have your FR spray mixture.

www.foambymail.com
nearly identical to auralex, great fire specs.
I have a/b'd it a lot vs auralex and it works a bit better. Similiar cooefficients in the mid range, but they pickup much better deeper down.
You can find deals from them on ebay and get well over 200sqft of 4"wedge foam for the price of 3ft of 2" pyramid auralex. wedge foam has more mass than a similiar peice of pyramid.
dont even bother auralex if you are going the foam route. foambymail has been great to me and many people I have recommended them to.

You want to look for Owens Cornign 703 or 705 high density fiberglass. Its a little tough to find since you need to get it through a contractor or pro dealer, but a 2x3 foot sheet is about 5 bucks and it will work a lot better than any other option mentioned here.
Re: Egg Carton padding vs. high end stuff
Good quality, affordable flame retardant acoustic foam can be had at www.markertek.com. The company is focused on video production, and this results in better prices than an audio tweak shop. They're a very useful resource.
A 54" x 54" sheet of 'Markerfoam', 2" thick, egg crate pattern, is... $21.99 plus shipping.

sweet linkage!
Re: Egg Carton padding vs. high end stuff
I recently built a iso booth and John Sayers web site (google search for the link) was really helpful
The problem with the egg crate foam is that it only absorbs highs (and poorly at that). You will end up with your lows and mids sounding like sh*t. Instead go to a lumber yard or roofing supply company (home depot will not have the stuff) and buy a couple cases of 2'x4' Owens Corning 703 rigid fiberglass 2" thick panels. You'll get 6 in a box and the box will likely run you ~ $40.
Wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves, and a mask when you work with fiberglass. Get some spray adhesive and some fabric (I bought king sized sheet sets at a street fair for $10) and cover the panels. Then hang them in your booth. You'll be happy with the results.
Hanging them across the corners (wall/ceiling, wall/wall, got it?) will absorb low end the best.
