bass guitar compression settings?

Hello!

What attack and release times might be a good place to start for the compression on a bass played with really fast down strokes in a three piece post-punk-ish rock mix?

I haven't decided if this is a problem or not, but i'm getting low notes played really fast blending into one long note. It growls really cool like this sometimes, but sometime i think i want the notes to punch through more.

I've read that a slow attack time might help the bass punch through by giving the attack definition.

Are there any problems i might look out for when using two compressions, one with a fast attack to control overall dynamics, and one with a slow attack for definition? What specific times and ratios might you use for these?
