Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE

Post by surf's up » Thu Jan 20, 2005 9:01 pm

Well not exactly hate, just something you don't feel as positively about as most do.

The BLUE Blueberry. I just dont like it as a vocal mic. Ive used it on myself as well as tried/used it on pretty much anyone who's come in to record vox. It just seems too mushy to me. Ive gotten some use out of it as a room/ambience mic, but I spent a good portion of my mic budget on it and hoped for it to be somewhat of a workhorse. I would call it a disappointment to me, though Im sure there plenty out there who have found it to be very helpful.

Alesis Quadrasynth. The keyboard that screams "I have no personality."

Shure Beta-58.

To me it's got a harsh top, and too much proximity effect. I'd rather have a SM-58 on just about anything or anybody.

sm-58. Everyone,m from walter sear to you, say its a great microphone. But i just hate it. Its bland and boring, and I just don't like the shape of the sound. I have been using the shure 55 reissue on everything and have been much happier.

Of course at work, 58's are all we have. They do take a beating, I gues that's the best thing about them.

does pro tools count? no no - hold on! bear with me! it's not the whole "digital sux blah blah" horsehit, either. it't just that i'm a guy who likes his eq knobs. i like to see my sweepable mids. i know what's there - i can dial in a drop at whatever Hz just by feel, and it takes me twice as long in pt.

You all are pussies because none of that stuff is as hated as the Alesis 3630. Ha!

Yeah, I dig the 3630!

Rock on.

I'm also drunk. But I still dig the 3630.

On the other end of the spectrum, DW drums are INCREDIBLY over-rated.

I should clarify that I hate it on my voice. It just seems kind of dark to me.I have the luxury of recording my vocals with an original AKG C-12, my buddy has a set and we used them on EVERYTHING. And it really makes my vocals shine. After recording 30 songs or so with that chain, that's what I liked and am pretty stubborn about changing it up. Of course every time we cut vox we will line up several mics and try them out and see what works. When he first got the U87 I was very excited to try it out and we went and cut some scratches with a line from this mic and a line from that mic and the C12 just schooled everything else.
I have used it on other singers but usually because they felt they HAD to sing through the neumann, not because I thought it sounded better.
you may love it and obviously many people do, I was just spoiled early on.

I used to hate the sm58/sm57 too... But I've found they just need to be plugged in to something better than a mackie to bring out the goodness.

What do I hate these days?? I'm having a hard time thinking of stuff. Ok I got it. Rode NT5's. Ok so I'm on a looooow budget but yeah these mics are not exciting at all really.
