Looking for a nice vocal compressor
Looking for a nice vocal compressor
I have a distressor and an RNC but now I'm looking for a new, really nice vocal compressor. What are you guys using?

I'll trade your distressor for my Symetrix 501... I won't even ask for cash from you.

Re: Looking for a nice vocal compressor
The only thing I might take over a Distressor is a LA-2A.

My faves are the Distressor, LA3, LA-2A, 1176LN, Manley Variable MU, and DBX 160 (VU). I have also REALLY enjoyed on occasion the LA4 (black or silver--two different units), Drawmer 1960, ART VLA, Altec 436C, API 525C, Pye 2-rack space half units, Manley El-Op, dbx 160X, Joemeek VC3, VC6Q, and VC1, Purple MC76, Urei LA22, FMR RNC, and yes, the Alesis 3630.

Re: Looking for a nice vocal compressor
I hate these posts. I read them and think,"Hear is another 'Home Recorder' needing some help on whiether or not to use the pre-sounus comp, or the compressor that comes with there All-in-one HD recorder". So I think I might be able to help. And then I read what there using now, and I say to my self, " Shit if I had that piece of gear I wouldn't even leave my studio." I would be to worried about getting it ripped of.

Re: Looking for a nice vocal compressor
I track probably 80% of vocals with an LA-3A. If I feel it needs "more", then during mix it's anywhere from an 1176LN Reissue to an Ashly SC-50... And anything and everything in between... I might try 2 or 3 different compressors/limiters before I'm content with the vocal tone and placement. But at that point, I may have caused excessive sibilance and/or p popping! So it becomes a matter of "fixing" that or back to square one I'll go!
Re: Looking for a nice vocal compressor
1176...when i track with an LA2 thing i always overdo it...
