wicked farleys' "sentinel and enterprise"
does anyone else own this album?
christina files recorded most of it @ fort apache and it's been one of my favorites since '98 when it came out...
the reason i'm posting about it is because it has an EXTREMELY unusual drum sound throughout.. the kick and snare are clear almost to the point of exaggeration. you hear EVERY hit on ALL the drums. it works really well in this case since the music is REALLY frenetic!
not only do i love this album for what it is, but i also love it because all the tones on it are unique and in some cases, experimental. a real inspiration to me...
anybody else want to weigh in on this album or something similarly inspiring?
BTW: after 3 message boards, finally thought of something to post.
GREAT JOB ON THE NEW BOARD!

Re: wicked farleys' "sentinel and enterprise"
mr ark,
a great record! i THINK, but could be 100% wrong, that it was tracked to tape and then dumped to protools and mixed there. certainly it was tracked to tape, it's the protools part i'm unsure about, but i seem to remember talk of that. not that that has anything to do with the unique drum sound:)
i like their second record "make it it" even better. it is perhaps the best "guitar" record i own.
yep, even better than "loveless".
and "van halen 1":)
i got to record them once in my basement and it was absolutely the loudest thing you ever heard. great great fun.
i'll see if i can get any more info on "sentinel" for ya...
cheers
scott

"not that that has anything to do with the unique drum sound:) "
yer not kidding! i'm still not sure how the drummer DOES that...wheaties maybe?
my old band played with them in amhearst, i think.. it was in an old hotel... i bought one of their 7" that night. i was BLOWN AWAY! (i also think that "the creamery for troubled youths" is by far the coolest name for a studio ever). i bought the cd when it came out and saw them play again that night. (i lived in burlington, Vt. at the time). i gave them a tape of my band's self-recorded album and tried to talk to them but they acted strange. it was almost like they were completely oblivious to me. i wasn't being rude or anything so i couldn't figure it out. someone who was riding with them on tour (or whatever it was) noticed that they weren't even paying attention to someone talking to them from two feet away and offered this explanation: "they're REALLY STONED."
it made sense. odd people, them farleys .
i still haven't picked up "make it it" i think it's about time..
your whole house must've been shaking! sounds like fun!

Re: wicked farleys' "sentinel and enterprise"
wait....
i just thought of another odd drum sound:
the exploited "don't forget the chaos"
i don't know WHAT they did to the toms but it is REALLY silly. i think it's a heavy flange effect+wide stereo panning. i mean, the whole song is funny because it includes quite a few rock "cliche's" (long solo...), but those drums are so RAD 'cause they're so WRONG!

Re: wicked farleys' "sentinel and enterprise"
i play with him in The Ivory Coast (our singer, jay, was the one who told you "they're REALLY STONED"...). he's a badass. there's been plenty of times at practice when he'll just do something and i'll be looking at him like "wha.....?" one of the best shows i've ever seen was the farleys at a loft party in boston a couple years ago. we were standing right behind ken (the drummah) and every song was a freakin MARATHON! i kept thinking "they gotta play a slow one next..." and they'd play something even faster...black ark wrote:

found out afterwards he was tripping on mushrooms the whole time
i can't recommend "make it it" enough. you'll love it.
cheers,
