Marquee Moon on vinyl...

Post by burn » Sat Jan 12, 2008 1:12 pm

Just bought Marquee Moon on vinyl (the "4 men with beards" reissue), before I owned the cd version and holy shit.... the sound of the vinyl is so sweet, it's not even subtle, and I don't own a high end turntable (I have a recent radio shack turntable). The drums, the guitars, the bass, everything sound so much real. It's the first time I notice such a big improvement over the cd version...

I agree. I have both CD and vinyl versions, the LP sounds really good.

Now go and get The Blow Up on vinyl from ROIR.

It's amazing how much stuff sounds ENTIRELY different on CD than the original release format.

I've been buying a lot of re-issues lately and I'm constantly disappointed. Sometimes (like with my recent purchases of Deja Vu and In The Jungle Groove), it's a drag to own original versions and hear them like that. Sometimes, like with some of the older AC/DC catalog, I just had a feeling that these re-issues didn't sound like the original vinyl, and had friends who knew confirm my suspicions.

I think the Beatles Anthology (although not really the original versions) sounds pretty good, as does the recent expended edition of Tres Hombres. And the HDCD versions of the Joni Mitchell catalog are nicely done as well. But there's SO MUCH poorly done stuff that's being re-issued these days. It's really disappointing.

I amazingly saw this laying on a random table in a local Goodwill and snatched it up for like 50 cents. It was in perfect condition and I gave it to a friend because of a lack of a turntable at the time.

So you're friends with 50 Cent? That is cool!

The only recent case for me where this has worked in reverse is the new The New Pornographers record. The vinyl really sounds like poop, worse than the MP3s firing out of iTunes into the same stereo.

In a related vein, I recently read an argument that vinyl only sounds better because MOST of the reference stuff was recorded before the 80s, not smashed, mastered with analog gear, etc. Something to that, I think.

Funny, I've been meaning to write in about the Smiths "Hatful of Hollow". I picked up a used cd version over the weekend and I am amazed at how awful it sounds. I haven't listened to my vinyl version since high school (late 80s) so it's been some time but I know it sounded better than this. Still great songs, but it sounds like ass.

the funny thing about MArquee Moon is that for year I only listened to the cd version, and I thought it was a great album but I didn't really liked the sound, way too sterile.

The good news is that the original recording (vinyl) is not sterile at all, it probably sound more like what Television used to sound live.

I would actually buy that ... but I won't travel to Lidsville to do so.

I got fed up with awful sounding CDs last year and started buying older stuff on vinyl. My basic criteria is that if it originally came out on vinyl and is affordable, I'm buying it on vinyl, unless I know the CD is likely to sound decent. There are a few decent reissue series out there (Ramones on Rhino, Bowie and the Stones on Virgin, more I'm forgetting) and a lot of garbage. Like those newest AC/DC reissues.
