Anyone wanna take a stab at mixing this?

Post by Grahambo! » Tue Apr 08, 2008 9:49 pm

Howdy. Not sure if I will get flamed for this, but...

If I upload all the tracks in .mp3 format or whatever to this jam me and my buddies did (just guitar, bass, drums), would anyone consider mixing it for me (on a DAW of course) and sending it back so I can hear/see what they did? I'm new to mixing/recording, and want some advice. Obviously, I can't pay you.

I've done this before on a different forum (Ableton Live forums) and some guys happily did it for me, but I didn't really like their mixes. I figured it was because they were all into producing electronic music, not experimental/noise/krautrock junk like we play, haha.

So anyway. Any takers? I use Ableton Live 7 Suite, so unless you have Ableton, I'd have to send you the individual .wavs or mp3s (Bass track, Guitar, Kick, Snare, Left, Right overheads). That's it. Crappy recordings I bet to what you guys are used to. We have crappy vocals mics and 2 SM57s. So yeah...

I'll do it for free for fun in my spare time if you don't use MP3s. 16/44 is as low as I'll go. I'm busy until Friday night, ironically..

I'll setup an ftpd or something tomorrow.

I'd like a stab at it as well if I can have the consolidated Wav files byt tomorrow...and if rwc doesn;t mind.

cool yeah. I'll upload the .wavs in a bit via yousendit.com or something.

this song in particular is pretty noisey. The guitar is basically a drone for 8 mins haha. bass is tons of effects and blah blah. and drums are pretty heavy. we have crappy crappy mics, and we play in my basement, so i'm sure this isn't top-notch, but I'd be interested to hear/find out what experienced people do with it, especially since I'm a novice.

Here are two .zip files that contain 3 wavs each. First one is Guitar, Bass, Kick. Second is Snare, Left OH, Right OH. This is a nasty take, I know. We don't really have "songs" per se. We just sort of have ideas and rock them out live. We do a lot of really, really ambient junk as well w/ just samplers and organs and... yeah...you get the point.

Biggest influences are krautrock bands from the 70s. This song may or may not contain those influences. Our myspace probably has more tunes that coincide with those influences. I just wanted to see what people could do with some of our junk. Don't worry about the timing issues, etc. And be CREATIVE if you want. Delete crap. Move crap around. I don't care. Add effects if you want. Just curious.

Thanks again.
Graham

Note: If you'd rather take a stab at a song on our myspace, let me know, and I'll post that one, too.

Ha! This song is awesome! The drums are a little wobbly during some parts but all in all I really dig it. At times it got me thinking of this band Health that I'm really getting into right now. Great work, dudes. Some things came up and I won't have as much free time as I had hoped this weekend but I'm really looking forward to giving this mix a shot at some point.

Did you guys play to a click by any chance?

Haha thanks man. Yeah, we create some weird 10 minute jams in my basement probably more often than one would think. :D

No click tracks, not yet, at least, but I'm thinking we should. Our drummer has always expressed his hatred for click tracks as he believes a change in bpm can mean a lot for dynamics, etc. Maybe he's just naive, haha.

Take your time with the tune. no rush on my end.

Let me know what you think.

that megaupload site is driving me nuts.

I'm uploading it to http://tweakmy.net/demos/tapeop now for anyone else who finds megaupload to suck. should be there soon.

awesome mixes so far guys. thanks for this. It's been a lot of help in figuring out how to mix our stuff.

They all sound great! :D

I actually just bought an ATM450 condenser to test out in comparison to our crappy Audix vocal mics we use on the drums.... WORLD OF DIFFERENCE haha. So I'll probably be getting another soon. We also bought some new drum heads today for the new kit. The snare, especially, sounds ballin' now. Perfect 70s dead, but thick, snare sound on an old old Pearl export.

Keep it up. If any of you dig our tunes, or had fun mixing (or are currently having fun mixing) our stuff, I can upload more tunes. 8)

Haha! this is awesome! Thanks so much man. I bet the raw audio is horrible by your standards, too. These sound like $1million to us! Love it.

This is great!
I dig the tune, it reminds me of Hawkwind, dark and spacey.
Cool mixes by everyone too.
