You could tell Pete was playing because he actually did a few different licks and things here and there. Keys and bass sounded pre-recorded to me.

I definitely saw Roger's vocals not match up a couple of times....

It seemed pseudo live to me.

And they did bear a Zildjian logo. Cut from a bumper sticker, perhaps? :)

Totally real.

By the way, those are the old Who "bullseye" logos. Had nothing to do with patriotism.

Just watched it on YouTube. I boycotted the Superbowl this year due to their ad policies.

Two thoughts come to mind:

1) Keith Moon, RIP. (That kid ain't no Keith Moon.)

2) Can't they find any American bands to play the effing superbowl? It's not like this is a cricket match. If we're a colony to anyone anymore it's China, let's hear their supergroup? If it's gonna be geezers, bring on Aerosmith again. I really loved how Tyler could sing louder and higher than Britney on Walk This Way. Crooked Vultures? (Coalition of the Willing.)

What do you guys have against Zak Starkey? I think the dude's a terrific drummer and he's pretty much perfect for that band.

He's fine. Obviously a pro. Didn't know "Who" he was. Keith Moon's gotta be a tough act to follow, but c'mon. You've got to have seen videos of the Who with Keith Moon. When they had a big-time, high-pressure gig, he totally brought the energy. Ringo Jr. was just sitting there playing the drums. I bet even a 70 yr old Keith would've put out more wattage than that dude.

Weren't you the guy telling me (in a different thread) that it was important to be able to reference other drummers when the material called for it?

I think he totally does it! The way he plays, he CLEARLY knows all that shit, but he comes at it with his own thing, which is still high-energy (the crux of the thing, not the actualy licks, right?) and musical at the same time. His feel is totally great without being a full-on Moon clone. I mean, come on, which the fuck wants to hear that? I sure as hell don't.

The Who made some interesting decisions ove rth eyears. Bob Weston and I were talking about it yesterday. I LOVE Kenny Jones' playing in The Faces, but he sounded utterly bored when he played with The Who. How could that even be the same guy? Who knows? Maybe it was Pete telling him how to play, maybe it was the age and drugs getting to him. It's still pretty cool to me that they asked an old friend to take over the gig and then made him a full partner. That's respectable, even if his playing doesn't seem so to me.

Simon Phillips was a great call in my opinion. Here's a guy with tons of chops who can completely rock, gets the gig in the lineage of one of the greatest rock drum seats in history, and totally makes it his own. Because he's a flashy player with a lot of energy and technique, I thought he was terrific. Again, MUCH better to me than someone who would have just played all of Moonie's stuff note-for-note.

Zak's good call. Say what you want about the Superbowl deal (I still havent' seen all of it), but I dare you to play drums in some CRAZY good bands for over twenty years and then have some dude judge you based on one Superbowl halftime show "performance." Check the guy out. He's good. And I can't STAND Oasis.

I didn't mean to sit in judgement of Zak Starkey. My reaction seeing that video was to miss Keith Moon in that role - drummer for the Who at a big-time gig. I guess I'm alone in that reaction.

I'm not even a Who fan, or much of a Moon fan, but the only thing that made them interesting to me was watching Moon go apeshit on the drums and possibly do something certifiable afterwards. I just missed that seeing that video.

Zak Starkey did a great job, I would've shat myself in fear at that gig, much less played a perfect show. Some people just transcend "great" and "perfect" in certain situations. I think Moon + the Who was one of those transcendant combos that probably can't be replicated, I could be wrong. You obviously know more about this, have more back story and have thought about it more than me.

I agree, but the guy's been dead for 30 years.

Zak's also had this gig for a good while now. What, like 10 years maybe? Maybe a little less than that.

Since this has been my first superbowl i have ever really watched. I did notice something that made me think. There where no actually PA speakers. Which i could understand in the 4 min setup (which is pretty impressive) but for the price of superbowl ticket you would think they would care about the audince a little more. Or is there something i am missing. I have never been to a pro game so maybe the do have a decent house pa but i would be disapointed to buy a ticket to a game and get a crappy show. But most of that is due to me not being a big fan of sports.
We should only need one or two takes.

I have to agree. Honestly, I was never a fan of the who, but I went with a friend to see them do the Quadraphenia tour with Zak on drums years ago and I really thought he was channeling Keith Moon. It was really impressive.
[Asked whether his shades are prescription or just to look cool]
Guy: Well, I am the drummer.
