I had brought in my Thorens TD125 to a well known tech in Sacramento for an overhaul and to mount a new cartridge, and on the shelf behind him was a black Technics 1200 MKII in disrepair.
We got to talking and now when I drive back up to Sacto this weekend I will be coming home with my belt driven Thorens in addition to a freshly re-furbed direct drive TD1200.

Robert Forster of the Go-Betweens wrote an article about 30 album collections in The Monthly called "Spin It: 30 Albums."
I think anyone contributing to this thread will like it.
I've been collecting for years, so I have way more than 30 records, but after reading this article I'm thinking of breaking my collection up into 30 album units instead of chronological or alphabetical organization.
I'll never be able to actually get down to 30 records.

Addressing two of the criticisms directed towards the Technics SL1200mkII..
Technics SL1200MKII Tonearm Damping and Rewire
My refurbed unit mentioned above will have had these mods done to it, lucky me.

The command one has some "demanding" music on the other side to check your sound scene further. Haven't tried it out yet though.
But I may now that I have my turntable ( and new to me second turntable) back! Thanks Luis at Stereoadvisor. *
*Edit: Some techs think if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you change anything it will change how the amp sounds. But 50 years on, these electronics are not going to sound like they did on the showroom floor anyway. And the capacitors are probably not long for this world and should be replaced. That's my take now. At the time of this post, the Marantz and Sansui I bought there had been gone over by a tech of the "if it aint broke" ilk, and some things were replaced, but not very thoroughly. Both pieces were out of commission within six months. Of course the warranty was 90 days..

I didn't go this year. I usually go to the one in Novemeber, but I didn't hit that either this year.
I really like the concept a lot. But in the last few years, it's really become difficult to get the things that you want to pre-order. It's very competitive (from store to store, and who gets what inventory). So I missed out on a few things last year and soured, I guess.

I picked up a 2012 reissue sealed Double Nickels on the Dime, and some used jazz from that store pictured.
In other news, a small shop was closing this week (will open in a new location in a month or two) and was putting out stuff from boxloads of back hall inventory for half price on the "good stuff" and marking a lot down to a buck.
I swear I walked out of there three days in a row with an armload. It has put me over the 1,ooo lp bar.
And of course filled up those two new shelves I just put in recently. Sheesh!
