so far all i've heard of this is the tattoo one (meh) and stay frosty, which sounds completely ridiculous on the radio. it does seem to have that hyperlimited buzziness about it. snarl, how did making an mp3 make it any better? that should almost invariably make it more distorted.

It is counterintuitive. I was trying to play the cd on my computer. That computer in particular feels like it has software gain staging issues, if you know what I mean. Sometimes things just sound distorted and others don't. The CD player has distorted on other CD's, but mp3's always sound fine. Because it's fucked up on other CD's I didn't think much of it until I had to turn the volume down (yes, I did use a knob) on my main computer. I don't really know how to explain it for sure though.MoreSpaceEcho wrote:snarl, how did making an mp3 make it any better? that should almost invariably make it more distorted.

Magic Knob sounds like a Van Halen song title.

This record sounds like a boombox on '10' with a pillow over the speakers.
The classic VH records were absolutely thunderous. Ed's guitar into all that reverb... headroom galore. They were truly a band shaking the heavens.
Now they are crammed into a tiny, fizzy box fighting for air.
Shame what has become of big-label music production in the 21st century. At least in their heyday they were selling top quality product.

I record, mix, and master in my Philly-based home studio, the Spacement. https://linktr.ee/ipressrecord
It is a surprisingly "fun" ride musically. I still get a big smile when the rhythm guitar drops out and Ed launches into a solo... I could pretty much hear that for the rest of my life. Songs aren't all that memorable, and a lot of them cover the same ground. But overall I'm pleasantly surprised, and a little impressed that they went in a decidedly un-modern direction, musically. It really does harken back to those old days. It is the most hard rocking VH since... well, since 1984.
They should have gone with the old headroomy sound, and dropped a couple songs. But otherwise, this shits all over Van Hagar so fuck yeah to that.
