Cassette recording of some guy's private lesson with Metheny
Interspersed throughout Metheny talks about inspiration from horn players, specifically the circular flowing blowing where runs can go on and on by using a grouping of notes in many combinations, emphasizing "important" notes, and getting that fluid flow that horns get, without the stop start mechanical feel that guitars can sometimes, in less capable hands, have.
Hearing constant triplets, swing, a lot going on here.

Thanks, yeah, I've dug Beck's Blow By Blow and Wired for years. Got the first couple Mahavishnu and a few McLaughlin as well.
Metheny and let me throw Bill Evans in there too, have a floaty thing going on that took me awhile to appreciate. Incredible chops and feel.

What does Pat Metheny have in common with Jeff Beck, aside from the fact that both play mostly instrumental music on guitars?

Assuming you're referring to my post.
The first sentence is saying thanks for the Jeff Beck reference to check out.
The second is saying that Pat Metheny and Bill Evans styles, to my mind, have a floating sensibility to them.
Apologies if that wasn't made clear.

No, I was sort of wondering why Waltz would recommend Jeff Beck and Mahavishnu to someone asking about Metheny. That's a pretty big stretch to me.
