Two new songs in one... Moog, 12-Strings, glock +...

Post by infopimpster » Sun Aug 23, 2009 10:34 am

Here is a high bitrate MP3 of yesterday's writing / recording session with my bandmate Scott:

http://www.audibus.com/electrolic/Elect ... ntoMTM.mp3

Two songs in one:

1) Old Time's Sake: A straight ahead rocker about 'going back to the well'... featuring: crazy Moog action, Mike Mills-ian descending Vox... and some wacked out Pavement guitar riffing -----transitioning into--->

2) Make the Most: A lush 12 string production with Glockenspeils.

Session notes:

Vox and Glockenspeil: Pearlman TM-LE -> UA 610 (redlined at points) -> 1176 at 4:1 compression (committed live)
Electric Guitar: Strat Plus -> Big Muff -> King Amplification Tigerhund -> SM57 in grill cloth slightly off center -> CRS-IND DM4412 preamp
Acoustics: 12 and 6 strings -> C12 Clone (Dave Thomas-modded Apex 460 with Peluso capsule) 2 feet off pointing at 12th fret -> DM4412
Moog -> DI into 1176 with Dr Pepper mode engaged and pushed just into dirt
Drums: SM7 on kick, C12 on Overhead, SM7s on snare and toms
Samples include legendary late night London radio host Clive Bull, me losing my shit laughing, and crickets...

Let us know what you think.... writing, playing, production, mix... we would appreciate feedback of any size shape or color.

haven't listened because i'm at work, but i love moogs, vox, and pavement, so i'm kind of psyched to hear this.
Thank you, Mario, but our princess is in another castle.

Two really excellent songs that dovetail beautifully. Excellent singing and musicianship. I really like the 3-over-4 and 2-over-3 rhythms that occur in each song. If I walked into a bar and the band was playing the first song, I'd stay.

Really petty tech stuff:
* Some of the cymbal crashes in the first song were a little bright and distracting.
* I admire the bare-bones instrumentation, but some washes of ear candy might be a consideration.
* I didn't really get a draw off the radio sample. Didn't tell me anything about the song or the space in which I heard the song.
* I felt the first song was lacking in "sonic glue." I heard tracks, but I wanted to hear a band, a room... maybe some compression, or some reverb, or an ambient mic, or a little tube grit.

Great stuff, though. Do more!

yeah this is better than 95% of bands out there.

the singing reminds me of lou barlow more than malkmus, though.

Wow - thanks for the great feedback!

I got an amazing bit of feedback from an ME: Dave at Sonopod gave me some super detailed suggestions in a private message... I'm tempted to post his feedback here but need his permission first.

Now that you guys pointed out some of those little details I can't "unsee" them and want to do another mix. :)
