greeny needs help

Post by boid » Fri Jan 01, 2010 1:24 pm

hey

I'm trying to mix a set of 9 "songs" (well...it's ALMOST music...haha) we recorded this summer

It's a different kind of music (different from what i have mixed before i mean)
and I'm a pretty unexperienced youngster, too.
Plus I had to change my usual mixing position

So I feel like I'm starting from zero again ....kinda lost

I'll post bit by bit in this thread every once in a while

Would be glad to get some feedback/tips/comments on the mix and/or music

thanks alot

here's the first one

Hi.

At 2:12 or so there is a low guitar that comes in... please tell me, did you TUNE it first? it goes all the way to the end, and the main TONIC (low note) at the beginning of every bar someone is out of tune with someone else. Please check that. My son used his pirate gun to shoot my laptop when that came in, no messing... he's only 3 1/2 but know when stuff ain't right in a mix, tuning wise.

As far as the mix goes, give some tranquilizers to the drummer, and learn to use the automation features in your DAW. Seriously, the drummer could tone it down. Either play like Keith Moon WITH the singer, or do not play when the singer is singing and keep a straight beat during the singing parts.

I did like the vocal delivery though, it was good to listen to that part.

Cheers
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

The whole thing (arrangement, performances, mix, tones, etc.) sounds like its reach is exceeding its grasp, but I really, really like that about it.

thanks for your time:)

haha, omg yeah...i dont know what i was thinking
it was a rg (w/floyd rose) with .009ers on, tuned really low
pain in the ass to change tuning on that thing
i guess i thought i could get away with it^^

but your 100% right.. gonna retrack that
thanks, I wouldnt have noticed it

I'm not sure what exactly you are refering to?
sloppy automation? not enough automation on some instruments?

About the drumming...he's a hyperactive kid
but apart from that it was my fault
because he wasnt involved in songwriting and played to guitar and click only

it's the first take, on the second I made(like in tied his arms down) him play much less...
the idea was to use both takes but now the first is so much more powerful that it's hard to edit both together or keeping them hard left/right playing at the same time
(there's a wee bit of take two ...from 0:53 to the fill)

you think i should use more of take2 ?!

Everything is fucked up in such an enjoyable way that it would feel like tearing the wings off of a butterfly to try to 'fix' it.

haha... hell that wasn't much of a compliment, was it
made me laugh really hard

anyway

here's one of the songs giving me a hard time

http://luut.bandcamp.com/track/mix2

can't get the drums right (kick is horrible)
i guess that's because of my shady engineering skills
haven't had a uptempo, guitardriven song before
so I have no idea what I'm doing

Actually that's about the highest kind of compliment there is. I like it so much it makes 'prefect' sound fucked up!

Honestly, I love it. I wouldn't re-track anything. The out-of-tune-ness is totally endearing to me and feels like it works because the whole vibe is pretty consistent, like jacked-up monkeys going nuts exploring on musical instruments, yet somehow, you just KNOW they've been doing it for years and years. I mean this in the best way.

Mix-wise (and take this with a grain of salt because I'm listening through laptop speakers), I could use a TOUCH less acoustic guitar and and BIT more brightness to the vocals. It's possible that the bass could come up, but it's hard to say with the laptop speakers.

"...like jacked-up monkeys going nuts exploring on musical instruments.."

:D this keeps getting better and better

love you guys:) thanks for listening and comming up with those lovely compliments... i really appreciate it!
I'm taking notes of everything you say and will be remixing in a few days with a fresh perspective

For the next song, I intentended a lofi, almost toy-like sound
but i think that one backfired on me, cause it's really crappy now and impossible for me to mix (esp the part comming up around 2:30)

http://luut.bandcamp.com/track/mix3

(I cut off the end cause there still is some serious stereo estrangement to be done:))

any ideas how to make some use of it?

btw im sorry for posting so much material, but i REALLY need some objectivity

That last song is actually pretty cool. I like the lag in the timing in every phrase in the beginning. Sonically, I think the kick sounds really boxy and the snare kinda flat. Have you checked phase with close mics and overheads? I think they could be brought down in level just a tad too.

 fuck....forgot to flip the phase on the kick and the room mic indeed!!!(NEVER do that ITB, but i recorded this with a different setup without phase switches..so there's my lame excuse;))
and all the time i was thinking like wtf is wrong with that thing?!

thanks a lot

its better now but nowhere near nice...snare's still shitty, too, you're right
--> shitty engineering

you can only feel the kick... i'm having trouble with those damn dense mixes
i think the bass is clouding the kicks subs and the guitars its punch ....
need to find some place to put that thing...

a kingdome for a place to settle the kick in!

ok class you're dismissed for now :)

gonna post them here once I've finished them
for free download if anyone's interested

thanks, you guys helped me out ALOT...slowly getting "there"
bye

I'd try high passing the bass and guitars. Obviously you can high pass the guitars a lot higher than the bass. Add somewhere around 5-6k for some attack on the kick and cut that range on the guitars to open a spot for it. Good luck!

that did the trick! :D
(to some degree at least)

guitars were already highpassed,
so was the bass, but not enough, apparently

cleaned up the lowend like *snap*

magik.... i love when that happens
youre a wizzard:)

THANK YOU
