i just finished reading Confessions of a Record Producer by Moses Avalon and he wrote that you make around 40,000 if you work in a studio in LA or NY, 90,000 if your out on the road three quarters of the year, and some successful engineers make 200,000.... how true is this?

Re: income
It's pretty accurate, though that 'on the road' wage is at the high end, i would say - either that or it's the higher end of possible job positions.
America... just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.

Re: income
just for your info, my friends who work in studios in SF make 20-30. which for san francisco is just BARELY livable.
Re: income
I don?t want to imply that i want to get into the music business for money because im not and the fact that i could make 20 or 30 grand or 200,000 does not sway my decision to get involved with the music business. I was just wondering if this book is legit and what kind of engineer makes 200,000 because as far as i know i have never heard of that.

Re: income
Engineers like Roger Nichols, Mark Ainslay, Bob Clearmountain, Butch Vig and the like probably are in that 200k range...
'on the road' means doing sound for live shows. FOH engineers usually make more than monitor engineers, etc.

Which is *much* likelier to mean "touring productions of Andrew Loyd Weber Musicals" or "Disney's Ice Skating Spectacle" rather than doing sound for Aerosmith or Yo La Tengo (or even Britney or Randy Travis).bombastique wrote:'on the road' means doing sound for live shows.

Re: income
if the book is wrong what is the avarage income of a recording engineer?

Re: income
I'd find it meaningful to hear how much engineers who record music they like earn.

Re: income
It varies a lot from city to city and from engineer to engineer. I'd say on average, probably about the same as a public school teacher without benefits.pvassil3 wrote:if the book is wrong what is the avarage income of a recording engineer?

Re: income
I would guess that once established, $20k to $30k a year minimum. Pray for good years.
I've heard it can take up to seven years to build a large enough client list to freelance without a day gig. Unless you are lucky...

Not to brag, but after eight years of running my studio in this rural paradise, I've got a bank account in the four figures, and that's not counting the decimal places!
