What are you listening to?

I am a longtime lurker on this board; haven't posted here in a while and moved up to Vancouver a few months ago from SF.

Wanted to ask what you guys have been listening to lately. I'm always on the lookout for new music of any genre. I always find that the more new stuff I listen to helps me in my writing/recording.

Some stuff I've recently started listening to:

Arcade Fire -- I know, Pitchfork gave it glowing reviews. But I have to say the more I listen to it the more I like it. They remind me of Suede.

The Stills -- Like Arcade Fire, another Canadian band that started to grow on me.

Killers -- Fun music to drive to.

Scissor Sisters -- More fun driving music. I spent lots of time in my car.

Le Tigre -- Their first CD; it's been out for a while, but I only recently got around to listening to it.

I'm also listening to more oldies like Sinatra, Mahalia Jackson, Ray Charles, Dean Martin, etc. and it's always easy to forget how amazing the musicianship is. It's probably obvious to the older folks here, but it was my grandparents' music.

Any suggestions? I haven't listened to a lot of rap/hip-hop lately but I'm not sure if any here actually likes rap.

can't say most of the stuff on your list has really caught my attention, but I really do love Arcade Fire. Apparently a lot of people have complained about their having pitchfork's attention, and in that way have been considered too hip and too trendy for elitist hipsters.

I say who cares. Great music is great music.

Bjork's Medulla is lovely. Go listen to some Gamelan music. Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Coltrane.

Right now, I'm listening to The Chiffons. They rule.

Right now as I type this I am hearing Marianne Faithfull's "Ghost Dance" on my iTunes, now switching to "Die Matrosen" by LiLiPut.

I just got Elvis Costello's "The Delivery Man" so I've been spinning that a bit. For Xmas I got John Lennon's "Rock And Roll" album, which is an old favorite, the new "Smile" by Brian Wilson, and "Tago Mago" and "Future Days" by Can. Plus the new William Shatner CD, "Has Been." So I will likely be playing that stuff a lot in the next couple of weeks.

Today Dad and I were listening to Cheap Trick at Budokan (comparing their version of "Ain't that a Shame" to the one on the Lennon CD), a Ventures Christmas record, some Gregorian Chant (he used to be a chant choir director) and a Bela Fleck tune or two.

Recently I have been listening to Bjork's "Medulla," Hendrix' "BBC Sessions," some Yoko Ono remixes, XTC's "Skylarking," Bill Laswell's "Dub chamber 3" and Tragically Hip's "Phantom power" as well as the usual assortment of Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Klaus Nomi and Beatles I have in semi-heavy rotation hereabouts.

iTunes just gave me the Irmin Schmidt remix of "Goatfooted Balloonman" from the Can DVD.

I haven't listened to Bjork in years; didn't know she had a new CD out. XTC's Skylarking is one of my favorite records. I managed to get the Japanese version at Amoeba in SF a while ago. I got Smile when it first came out, and stopped listening to it after a while when I couldn't get that damn vegetable song out of my head.

dwlb, let me know what the William Shatner record is like. I'm curious.

I've been listening to The bealtes (Revolver, sgt peppers.) I also learned of this band called the Polyphonic Spree, from some music show on like pbs or something. They are pretty interesting. Everyone i played them for didnt really like em, but i dig some of their songs.

Bad Brain's Black Dots album is superb...it's a bit down tempo but still rockin' as far as the heaviness goes...excellent album...i wish they would've done some reggae on it...
