okay, so i've got another photo nerd question...
thanks for all your help everyone.
i'm wondering what some photographers do to get such really deep, richly saturated colors. for example:
http://www.chrisbuck.com/PhotoGalery.as ... uItemID=32
http://www.wider-than-pictures.com/show/photos.html
etc...
notice how red the reds are, how blue the blues are... everything is deep and rich and beautiful.
so is it all a matter of film stock? or is it more in the lighting? or in the developing/paper? or a little bit of everything?
thanks...

shoot some kodak e100vs slide film with a polarizing filter.
That'll put your shittie print film to shame.

I think that if you want high speeds, high color saturation and no computer manipulation, I think push processing is the way to go.
Usually high speed film don't have saturated colors.
Or get some slide film and cross process it. That is, get the film processed in negative film chemistry. That'll give you some crazy colors.
After this, I think I'm gonna need $35. a question.

my crappy kodak digicam takes ok pictures. Real cameras are way more fun though. Nothing beats looking through a nice wide angle lens.

thats a cool pic helstab, you should darken those annoying bright spots in the upper area in photoshop if u can, but its a cool pic.

this is cross processing
this is in the printing itself, dense neg, underxposed paper
this took some serious time
photoshop
this is a really nice soft box, a medium format camera and a portra film
three strobes w/ reflectors, medium format camera, slide film (looks like Fuji Provia)

micaiah... i don't know if i meant exactly those photos by photos. i mean in general, i see some really professional stuff that is extremely rich in colors. so i guess i was right: it's a combination of many different things?
Re: okay, so i've got another photo nerd question...
I think the best thing you can do is go into a pro shop that sells film by the unpackaged roll. And treat it like a flavor. I think you'll have a lot of fun with high saturation slide film. Fuji Velvia or Provia, or Kodak 100VS or 100SW.
Just understand that light is what you are after. For shooting people, great photographers using ambient light will find that perfect spot and bring the subject into it. In high contrast situations, your gonna have blowouts ay some part of the spectrum. In no contrast situations, like a dark subdued bar, your going to have dull color unless there is a great colored lighting somewhere. Film all works at an optimal range of light, and thats when you get that color pop. I guess it's like ears in a studio, use your sences and find it. You've got an eye and something that records what you see. You know a mic's limitations, and you'll get to know films limitations. Every film is a pallette just as every mic has a sonic charecter.

oh yeah, something else i meant to ask: is it possible to get colors like that when working with digital? or is it going to be more in film? (i use both, just like with audio)
