Boston studio for tracking??

Boston studio for tracking??

Post by cjmnash » Fri Aug 28, 2009 4:09 pm

hey guys-

need a little help here. i've been asked to track a band in boston and am looking for a few studios to check out. i'll be tracking drums, bass, 2 egs and vox. i'd like to cut them all at the same time with good sight lines and isolation, i'd love to find a place where drums/bass/guitars could all physically be in the same room, but guitar cabs in iso booths.

i'd also like a console (trident or the like) and *god willing* a 2" machine.

so what does boston have to offer??

thanks in advance,

This thread will likely get a good spread of replies - lots of great studios in/around Boston!

Off the top of my head, one good choice that covers what you specify is Camp Street in Cambridge (immediately north of Boston). Neve/Tweed board, 2", PTHD, EMT 140, good sight lines, multiple amp iso booths w/glass, lots of great vintage amps, gear, keys. Paul Kolderie is the owner. If you contact them, say Scott Dakota referred you.

mad oak is awesome. large isos and a very large live room. tons of outboard pres but the board is "ok". great outboard selection though.

q division is the shit but it is expensive.

By far, the best tracking studio I've ever used is in the Jamaica Plain part of Boston: Squid Hell. Best acoustics ever. API console.

I recorded the upcoming Mission of Burma album there last winter.

thanks a ton guys! all the suggestions were spot on and right up my alley and saved me a TON of time!!!

i emailed all studio managers to see what the rates look like--- i'll keep you posted to see where i end up, and how things went.

i'm still in the early stages of planning this project, but if it comes through we'll have to all get together for a beer or something. (first round is on me!)

i'm late to the game, but i'm kinda partial to camp street studio in cambridge.

paul kolderie's joint. super great! amazing Tweed Audio board, studer deck, plate, shite-tons of gear and such. most importantly, awesome people.

Q Division is a very cool place. You might also look into Wellspring. It's a little ways out of town, but it's spacious and has a funky, cool vibe. You could get a lot done there efficiently.
