Available kits for DIY assembly

Post by Family Hoof » Wed Nov 02, 2005 10:27 pm

It's only been two days and already I see more than one thread asking where to find DIY kits, so I think we should create a sticky listing all of them in an effort to keep this place free of clutter. If you ask me a kit is something which supplies some or all of the parts for you, a finished PCB at the very least. That rules out of all the Gyraf projects, which are merely instructions requiring a great deal of further investigation on behalf of the builder.

Here are the ones I can think of. Please add to the list!

http://www.jlmaudio.com/kits.htm -- Mic pre, power supplies, switching, DI, 1272 conversion, and front panel kits. The selection keeps growing! Partial, complete, self-assembly, and preassembled versions are all available.

http://www.seventhcirclestudios.com/SCA/SCA.htm -- Complete or partial kits and instructions for self-assembly of mic preamps (and soon a DI), which mount in their 2RU rack system.

http://www.hamptone.com/newkits.htm -- Complete kits and instructions for self-assembly of stand alone mic preamps (and soon a compressor).

http://www.orphanaudio.com/925/ -- Partial kit (no chassis or power supply) for conversion of a Quad Eight CA227 line amp into a full-featured mic preamp. Also sells 1RU cases for racking up old 1.5" console modules.

http://www.glideonfade.com/electronics.htm -- Partial self or preassembled kit for converting a Neve 1272 module into a mic preamp, correctly! May also aid in building a Neve pre from spare parts.

http://www.purpleaudio.com/Product/MC76Kit.html -- A partial kit version of Purple Audio's MC76 1176 type compressor. Includes PCB, schematic and few hard to find components.

http://tangible-technology.com/dynamics ... L1176.html -- A partial FET compressor kit from Scott Liebers and Eddie Ciletti. Includes PCBs, documentation, and couple of crucial parts.

Kevin carter came up with this RCA BC-2B, if it comes with the components in the picture, its a really great value, the parts on the board are really high quality. I would be suprised if an original sounded anywhere near as good as this kit probably does. If you've ever heard lundahl transformers you probably know what I mean. K and K is also the north american distributor for lundahl transformers.

Erno Borbely is somewhat of a super genius depending upon who you talk to.

Here's relevant stereo LA2a kit that's new to the scene... mostly PCB, hardly any point to point compared to original designs.

Orphan Audio preamp kits can be ordered from basic to complete.

-The basic kit assumes you have a CA-127, 127a, or 137 lineamp card to convert. The customer provides case, knob, supply and connectors.

-Kit-2 adds a factory recapped and tested CA card (for only $100usd more).

Customers can add a Quad Eight prebuilt power supply, Orphan Audio rackmount case, milled and engraved front panel, NOS Quad Eight knob, Class-A DI input module, output attenuator and other options.
All kits ship with complete assembly instructions and schematics in "Heathkit" format.
(All attempts have been made to allow a small simian, with a hangover and a bad attitude, to complete the kits with the provided manual, although knowing which end of a soldering iron to pick up helps !)

Quad Eight Electronics offers all versions prebuilt, for those who want "plug and play" modules as well as custom packaging and mods for all classic modules.

I was going to add Midwest Analog Products, but unfortunately it seems Thomas Henry has closed up shop:

M.A.P. had, among other things, electronic drum circuits.
