Some stuff to read if interested in DIY Gear
Hey readers! I'm busting in on Tim's post to clarify this thread. Please only post titles of books or websites (with links please) on this thread. I cleaned out a bunch of "Great book" and "Great thread" posts from this to make sure it is all content. Thanks! -LC, your soldering moderator
PS: For an excellent forum where people trade schematics and have a lot of electronics knowledge visit http://www.prodigy-pro.com/diy/index.php#1
I hate to break it to y'all, but if you're going to do electronics, you've got to come to grips with some fundamental concepts that you're not going to learn on any message board. Here are some books that might help:
Beginner's Guide to Reading Schematics
Electronic Projects for Musicians
Practical Electronics for Inventors
The Art of Electronics
The Art of Electronics (Student Manual with Exercises)
Audio Cyclopedia
RCA Receiving Tube Manual
Radiotron Designer's Handbook
Nice list with a few of the same titles at Jensen Transformers.

microelectronic circuits by sedra and smith is a pretty great book on opamps. I still cant understand most of the book, but its a text book that is very easy to read, lots of great stuff on FETs in there.

Right now I'm slogging through a textbook I found at the thrift store called Electric Circuit Fundamentals. 600+ pages on resistors, caps, inductors & transformers. So far it's pretty good.

Hey, don't forget Forrest M. Mims III's Getting Started in Electronics (a radioshack publication...2000 I think)...and his Timer, Op Amp & Optoelectronic Circuits & Projects (also radioshack...1998 I think)...
both REALLY easy (and funny) to read...many cute drawings...diode sweating, transistors juggling electrons, a light blub saying "you turn me on!" haha... doesn't hit you with too much at once... just a primer, but the perfect one for priming.

Anything Walter Jung has written is useful, like his Opamp Cookbook:

Don Lancaster's Active Filter Cookbook is also a classic.

i just got "How to Test Almost Anything Electronic" by Delton T. Horn and it's really good. breaks down systems, explains how to troubleshoot, etc. it's also written at a good mid level. basic enough not to be overwhelemed, but still sections i'll read and think, ok, i sorta got that, i'll have to come back to this again later to fully comprehend.
it has really helped my understanding of things on a component level better.
it's not really specific to audio, though it does cover it. it talks a lot about TVs, and power supplies in general.... how to look for failing capacitors... explains really well when/how to use your mulitmeter and your oscilloscope. good on the fundamentals for those who never had formal training like myself. i had known how to use things only in a very specifc application as it pertained to my specific problem, and this book helped open my eyes a lot to the bigger picture.

I just discovered Nicolas Collins' Handmade Electronic Music. It's short on theory but it does get you safely started on your way to hacking and circuit bending with simple, cheap, easily found components.

Re: Some stuff to read...
Radiotron is way advanced for beginners getting into tubes. and expensive too. not to mention that there are 4 different editions. 3 (thin) and 4 (very heavy) are the ones to get.
RC-3O (which is mentioned) is great for learning about fundamentals of resistance coupled and direct coupled tube applications.
Other great books are reprints of naval manuals. Basic Electricity and Basic Electronics.

Navy Neets Manuals, among other Navy manuals.
some interesting stuff, some of it useful (Ampex and tube-related docs)
