Jury Duty for pro engineers?

Post by TapeOpLarry » Sat Apr 12, 2014 4:54 pm

I just got the letter. 2 days, maybe more. As we all do, I have sessions and many coming from other places. I can't reschedule on a day's notice!

What have you all dine about this in the past?

In my state (IL), you can typically call and get a re-schedule, but no guarantees.

If you do call, do it right away, be accurate, advise that you have serious business (out of state visitors should be mentioned, if applicable), ask for a new and certain date.

Good luck!

Yes, in NY, you can usually get at least one (1) postponement.

You could also just get disqualified asap. You hate everyone, you have _very_ strong political convictions, you have five relatives that are whatever occupation the attorneys mention, etc., etc.

Yeah but, you have to show up to get disqualified.

Also, sometimes people try mebbe a little too hard to get kicked off, and get in varying degrees of resultant trouble, from just being sent back to the jury pool for the whole day to an outright finding of contempt of court.

In Arizona, you could claim financial hardship since you are self employed. Usually you have to write a letter and submit it a week or so in advance. If that doesn't work, you have to show up and wait to be excused...so worst case you've lost one day.

I haven't been called back since I wrote that I believe in "jury nullification" ( which is not a lie) on my form.

Drop an F-bomb every other effing word.

When they finally let us go home I filled out a little "satisfaction" survey. I wrote in the comments "I've never before seen so many people's time so thoroughly wasted." So don't expect to get off scott free.

Not to preach, and we all have our needs and situations but, if you were a party to a suit or a witness or defendant inna criminal case, would you want someone like you on your jury?

Or avoiding your jury?

In IL we generally get more notice than a couple of days. That's weird. Some employers can make the case that you're invaluable and they can't function without you, but since you run your own business that might be tricky.

I'll echo what vvv said. I would not like it if my jury was composed solely of people who were too dumb to figure a way out of jury duty, so I always find a way to show up.

One thing I forgot to say is that maybe your clients will simply be civic-minded enough to be happy to reschedule for you to do your jury duty. Every employer I've had, except one, was very encouraging for me to do jury duty. The only people that gave me shit about not trying to get out of it was the law school I worked at. And then I did the jury nullification thing, which actually kindof shocked me how that knocked me out of contention. I didn't do it on purpose to get out of jury duty.

Employers are legally required to let you out of work for jury duty.
