Hooking up a Tascam 388 to a Pioneer SR 202W Spring Reverb

Post by RuggerDrummer » Fri Feb 05, 2016 9:54 am

Anybody know the best way to do this?

Is it the same process with adding reverb to already recorded tracks, or is it different if you are doing it while recording?

I'm so new at all this so I appreciate ya'll's help and patience in this!

you want to print the reverb to tape or just use it for mixing?

for mixing:

are there aux sends on this board/unit?

use these to send a track to the reverb units INPUTS.

send the reverb units OUTPUTS to the aux INPUT on the board. .

I'd like it to mix for right now. Don't have anything to print on. Probably going to print it at an actual studio.

for mixing:

are there aux sends on this board/unit?

On each track there is one 1/4" send and one 1/4" receive jack.

use these to send a track to the reverb units INPUTS.

On the reverb unit there are 2 RCA input jacks

send the reverb units OUTPUTS to the aux INPUT on the board. .
On the reverb unit there are 2 RCA output jacks

So I assume you're talking about these.

On the reverb unit there are also RCA jacks labled Tape-A Recording Playback (4 total) and Tape-B Recording Playback (4 total).
What are these for?

Thank you again...very much!

1 minute of googling:

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much ... ookup.html

"You can simply connect your stereo signal to the L&R inputs of the SR202 and bring the return signal from its L&R outputs but I believe that you will have a mix of both dry and wet signal which isn't always ideal for studio applications.

However, if you go in on the Left channel but back out on the Right you will get just the wet signal. Likewise if you go in on the Right but out on the left, same thing.

Basically they're wired so that the reverb from the left channel is mixed with dry signal of the right channel and vice-versa so consequently if you're using it in mono and there is no signal on the other channel then only the reverb will come through."

Are the springs good enough it would be worth building it a proper interface?
The previous statement is from a guy who records his own, and other projects for fun. No money is made.

Sounds like joninc has got you all set up. I've also got a Pioneer reverb headed my way in a couple weeks as well (to use with a 388) so I'll report back if I figure out any interesting sounds or tricks.

I just tracked some vocals with it to my 388. Sounds pretty damn cool.

One more question. Is there a way to use this on multiple channels on the 388? Looks like you can just plug it into one at a time.

Are you running it on the specific channel insert right now?

If you run it in either the AUX or FX loop you can apply to any channel you want.

I am. I was wondering how to run it through AUX or FX loop on the 388 so that I can apply it to any channel.

I am very new and don't know what to plug it where on both units to make the reverb work on any channel.

Thank you very much for your help!

Ok. I just whipped up a couple images to help explain.

IMAGE 1: Hook up your reverb to the EFX send and EFX return, the same way you did on the channel insert. Make sense?

IMAGE 2: Turn up the EFX send and return volumes. Then you can use the row of blue knobs to apply reverb to each desired track.

The same thing goes for the AUX loop. Follow the same procedure, but go AUX out and in to return #2. (and then use the green knobs to control)
I often times use a reverb in the FX loop and a delay in the AUX loop.

Hope that helps!

The Effect Out jack should be Reverb Out and the Effect Rtn jacks, Reverb In.

I disagree. I think you're misinterpreting the way it's intended to be read...

It's supposed read as "EFX Out -> Reverb In" and "Reverb Out -> EFX Return"... or "EFX Out goes to Reverb Input", and "Reverb Output goes to EFX Return".

The arrows are not meant to be labels that say "This is the reverb out", and "this is the reverb return". Make sense?

The OP said the graphics helped immensely, so I'm pretty sure they got it.

Resurrecting this old thread because I am having the same problem. I want to run this same reverb unit through the effects loop on my 388. I have it set up like above picture. The reverb is all the way up on the 202, and i have the master effect gain, effect rtn gain, and effect channel gain all situated so that I can hear the reverb while recording. But on playback it gets recorded dry. Is there something I’m missing? I’d really like to use the effect loop to run reverb on a couple tracks while printing to tape. But every combination of button pressing and knob twisting still leaves me with a dry track when listening back.
