noise between ensemble interface and Ramsa mixer

Post by Kordorama » Fri Feb 05, 2016 5:59 pm

Hi all

I have a weird problem where I have noise between my mixer and my interface. when I isolate either one, the noise goes away. It sounds similar to when a cable is plugged into an amp without the instrument connected to the other side - the noise can be turned up or down depending on mixer gain.

ensemble 1/4" 1+2 outputs --> patchbay --> mixer inserts = noise
ensemble 1/4" 1+2 outputs ----------------->mixer xlr input = noise
ensemble 1/4" stereo headphone outputs--->mixer xlr input = noise

ensemble --------------------> speakers = no noise
iPhone/computer --------------> mixer = no noise

My gear:

-apogee ensemble firewire interface
-Ramsa 8716 mixer

the pin connections on the back panel of the ramsa read:

Ramsa Input Connection
no1: ground
no2: cold
no3: hot

So I'm confused why the computer doesn't make a noise, but the interface does. Also, could certain self-wired cables 'correct' the older pinouts of the Ramsa to play nice with the ensemble?

Anyone have any suggestions?

thanks!
matt

Try making a cable with pin three hot on the ramsa end, pin two hot on the ensemble end, and see if that helps.

thanks for your response. the noise went away when I used TRS -> XLR cable throughout the signal path, I guess i was using a TS cable somewhere even during troubleshooting. dumb move on my part.
