LPR-35 at 15IPS (TEAC 3340)

Post by musichascolors » Thu Mar 03, 2016 8:02 am

Trying to figure out which tape formulation to use with the TEAC 3340. I had been using SM468 on 7" reels. About to move up to 10.5" reels and am wondering whether to stick with the 468 or go to LPR35.

Any insight/experience would be appreciated!

I have a 3440, not sure exactly how similar it is beyond the different motor. I use LPR35 mainly b/c I already had a stock of it for my 388.

Cool, thanks. My understanding is the SM911 and LPR35 are the same tape formulation, but with a different thickness.

yes LPR is 1 mil and SM911 is 1.5mil. I was told by Adrian at Adrian Pro Audio (great tech in SoCal) that due to the faster speed the thicker tape was needed for the 3340.

Got it, yeah that makes sense. I may stick with the 468 in that case, as I've been pretty satisfied with its sound.

I've had a 3340 since 1971. Still running fine.
Never had a problem running 1 mil stock on it.
Scotch (3M), Ampex (Quantegy), BASF, Agfa, Sony, Maxell, TDK, you name it.
If the machine has a problem with 1 mil it is set up wrong.
