TOMB running very slow for you?

Post by emrr » Wed Dec 14, 2016 9:47 am

It has been for me for several months, several minutes to load a page is usual. True at several locations, multiple systems.

Lemme guess - yer onna tablet or phone?

Or are using a not-mainstream browser?

It's horrible on my Android with Chrome tab, but no issues on my laptops with Chrome or Edge.

Nope. Desktops at 2 different locations, phone overseas on wifi about the same. I'm clocking 59mbps down and 5mbps up as we speak. This is the slowest place I can find on the web. I really can walk away for 5 minutes between page loads, maybe not have it when I check back. Everywhere else is pretty fast.

Loading of "megaboard" takes noticably longer than any other page on the internet. Everything else seems about normal.

Yep, doesn't matter what computer or browser or device I use. I have 1gbps up and down so not my internet connection. A moderator suggested the intent was for this forum to go away eventually but so far just rotting a slow death.

The 'speriment was, I went from the first post, to the TapeOp forum opening page (where I had not been) to CNN then to the megaboard, then here = about a minute.

That said, coming in through the mega, what I never use (I use the new posts thing in the upper right corner), did hang about 10 seconds.

An ad blocker works wonders. I think the big delays are due to some kind of borked banner ad situation.

Answering earlier question, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, doesn't matter.

Today I timed each page load. It's exactly 2 minutes and 30 seconds, so it took 10 minutes to hit the home page, click 'view your posts', click this post, then get to the 'reply' window. It'll be 5 more by the time it's posted and I see the result.

Delays that are in exact increments of 30 seconds are often DNS related. It tries one DNS server for 30 seconds before moving to the next one up the stack. You might want to google resetting your DNS cache. (It's gonna be specific to your OS).

You could try inputting Google's DNS servers into your computer to see if that resolves the issue. Google's DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. You go into Local Area Connection->Properties->TCP/IP->Internet Protocol Version 4 (in windows 7 and previous. Not sure how you do this in later windows or Mac.

Edit: What do you get when you do tracert messageboard.tapeop.com in a command window? Any strange hops with long pauses?

Installing ad block chrome extension fixed it for me.
