| I just picked up an EV 635 over the weekend for $28! and it works great and sounds great but the male xlr pins are a bit loose. The plastic plate that the pins stick out of is actually loose, not the pins themselves. Anyway, there's one screw that holds that in and I tried tightening it to no avail. Who can do a simple mic repair? Or better yet, is there a way for me to get in there and do it? |

try turning the screw counter-clockwise and it should tighten. If this fails call EV and see if they can recommend a service center or send it back to them

Yeah, what he said....
And big congrats on the mic. It's one my favorites! Try singing into it from about an inch away with a pop filter in front f it.....add compression....great upfront rock and roll sound!

But no...CLOSE though! I used an EV666 exclusively on my voice for that record. I got my 635A after I had already finished recording. I've done a bunch of demoing since then with the 635A.
The thing is...the 2 mics are SO close sounding, tone wise. The concept isn't far off....both have almost no proximity effect, allowing you to really "work" the mic up close. I haven't really done an A/B but I SWEAR the 635A might actually be alittle more "solid". I don't know how better to describe what I hear.
The biggest difference is that the 635A is omni and the 666 is cardioid. The 635A sounds a bit more "open" for obvious reasons but even that is going to be subject to what is surrounding it. I found I didn't have to be careful with the 666 because it's a pretty tight mic and I really get up on it....I like the way those mics react to that. Vocal tracks done with these mics also seem to take really well to big fuzzy warm compression ala the 1176 or Distressor.
The other big difference is that      EV no longer makes or repairs the 666 and the 666 will run (or risk) you about 150 bones whereas EV still makes and repairs the 635A.....and as you know, they can be had for MUCH less. I think I paid about 160 bucks for one 666, 70 for another that needed some repair (somebody fucked the internal impedence scheme up...simple wiring issue) and a big fat 30 bucks for my 635A. Not to mention you don't have to find the 635A a special cable.
Yep....solid microphone for stupid low dough. Jeez....did I just do a mic review?

Awesome! Yeah, I've been waiting to find a 635 for stupid cheap and then BAM there it was. I DID have to fenagle a friend of mine into giving me a ride from San Francisco to Oakland during rush hour traffic to get the thing, but it was well worth it...I have a feeling I"m going to be using this mic for my vocals on my own album, which I'm currently working on. I'm doing all the bass now and should get to vox in about 3 weeks....can't wait. I used it yesterday for gang vocals with a punk band and I just aimed the thing at the ceiling and had everybody stand around...had the guys stand about twice as far back as the girls, and presto! Excellent. |

YEAH I dig the 635A too- this mic always reminds me of news reporters chasing corrupt politians "can we have a statement?....." it better be omni!!
I found one in the garbage and it works great. It won't win a beauty contest, but I love it. It seems to get a super honest acoustic sound. becuase its omni you can stick the sucker really deep into the sound hole. I like the un-hyped top sound for some things, it's a little darker. When I hear mixes a few years on tracked with that mic I always like it and remember I should whip the 635A out more often-
