Andy who? Falkner/Brion/Folds inspired pop...

Post by andywho » Tue Jun 17, 2003 12:22 pm

Howdy,

Long-time Tape Op reader, new to the forums; I'd like to share my music with ya...most of them are demos and rough mixes (although for me, that doesn't mean a lack of polishing), recorded in various apartments with my G4, a Digi001, random budget mics and a Pod.

The songs are at http://www.mp3.com/andythompson. Lemme know what you think...

thanks,
Andy

your songs are pretty nice...

but the name-dropping on your web page, jeez! it just kinda looks like you're desperate for "success".

I listened to "Keep On Driving (demo)". Sort of Elton John-ish. Not my fave genre. :skeptic: The mix sounds treble-y to me, especially that tambourine/cymbal ting ting ting. It's grating. I'd remix it.

Also, I'd take the (demo) out of the song title. First, pretty much everything on mp3.com could be called a demo. Second, it makes people not want to listen to it.

By the way, good singing. :)

yea, real slick voice. no doubting that.

i would do it with a real band if i were you. didnt like those fake real drums.
the songs are too pro sounding for that.

thanks a lot for the feedback...I've been really working on my voice lately, so it's nice to hear that it's coming across on recordings.

MIDI drums are the bane of my existance, but for some reason I can't seem to stop using them. which is stupid seeing as I have my drum set sitting in the next room.

four of the songs--"hello folks," "kicking myself," "on my feet again," and "your kind" have real drums. they were recording a few years ago, though, back when I only had some sm57's and a 58. but yeah, can't deny the life they bring to a track (even when they're recorded as poorly as they were)

thanks again
andy

Andy ~

Just listened to "keep on driving (demo)". Fantastic track. Beautiful voice.

BUT... you sadly ran the song thru the sparkle plug-in!! Some edges would be nice to hear. For example: On the awesome "twin guitar" solo, i was sad to hear both guitars EQd identically. You should mix up the textures more... perhaps drop in some acoustic instrumentation, Jellyfish-style.

You recorded this very well. Massive attention to detail. When you're recording, do you do things like trigger synth tones with the kick drum? Or use limiter/gates on many instruments? Just wondering how you got that sound...

Good work. You should get a record deal no problem if you want one. Really liked the arrangements.
