Rant: No Paying gigs!!!

Post by Dave Nutz » Thu Oct 21, 2004 5:47 pm

Doesnt anyone value the services of an assistant enough to pay them>?

i havent had a single playing job offer in the last 4 months. It seems NYC is slowly turning into the slave labor capital of the world......flame me if you want, but im not gonna be the one who eats your shit "interning" 60 hours a week at a deadend job in a crappy studio with no clients in a bad neighborhood for no pay or compensation.

anyone need an assistant for live sound work?

best way to get a live sound gig at a club (assuming that you're actually a good engineer... most of the house guys are useless here).... do a gig with a friend's band as their personal sound guy. kick ass. do this a few times and maybe you'll either get offered a few nights by the house guy (no-one works 7 nights a week in the same club) or if the manager is blown away by how good you are, maybe he'll fire the house guy and use you, or maybe the other bands will want to hire you for their band some other time... i got the gig doing f.o.h. for michael brecker because he heard me do a john patitucci gig. it can work. the main problem in nyc is that there aren't enough clubs with good sound systems that warrant getting a job there... you might want to check with 'rare' on 14th btw 9th and 10th... used to be 'the cooler'... their sound guy split a while ago and the place is in shambles as far as the rig goes. you could rewire and run it. it's shit right now, but some nice EAW mains... a little tired sounding, but fine for rock.

unfortunately the rule of thumb in this city seems to be lately that unless you're really good, no one gives a shit about you... but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Check out I.A.T.S.E. Local 1 union in NYC. They are all about the live and you will NEVER get treated like doodoo. The pay is regulated (upwards of $20 p/hour) and you will get benefits and free donuts on jobs.

Any stagehands out there? Find the donut diologue pretty funny? Heeeheee. Oh I think they are usually Krispy Kreme. It is a requirement on a lot of shows we work on that we get a coffee break with donuts 2 hours into our shift. At least in Minneapolis anyway!

Why are so many people obsessed with Krispy Kreme? They are the Ford Pinto of donuts.
