digital technology has flipped the entire world of audio recording upside down (in a good way) and so with that, there is not only a new approach of how music is made, but also how its promoted and distributed.
freelance producers are popping up like never before.
i guess because for the first time ever - a person with only a computer and some software can begin making entire productions at home.
no more is that option only available for those with money.
surely great times we live in (at least those of us that arent getting bombed and what-not)
anyhow,
ive been composing music for over 14 years and always wanted to get into making music for video games (they were a big part of my childhood).
also soundscapes for documentaries and possibly tv shows/movies.
i was wondering if anyone had any tips/advice/links on the subject of freelance producing.
what is the current approach for getting serious about this.
(besides the old "who you know" technique)
in the past, you would have to be signed under a label (and i know this is still how its done), but there is more and more people that simply post their demos on their website, and do a lot of cold calls/emails.
or start their own label.
but is contacting a (lets say a video game) company directly the best approach?
there are also agencies out there that will take your compositions, and "call you if anyone is interested" but it seems that they are only interested in short loops, and the process seems to be too controlled.
any thoughts?

Re: modern FREELANCE producer
Do you want to be a composer or a producer?
The old "who you know" technique has been a pretty proven industry standard for many years.

I was programming in the industry until 2001, when I burned out.
A lot of hiring and networking goes on in the Game Deveveloment Conference usually held on the WC.
Go to gamasutra.com and look into getting a pass.
