I want to take jazz piano lessons in Seattle.

Post by andrew embassy » Wed Feb 09, 2005 11:32 am

I want to take jazz piano lessons. I'm really a neophyte at piano, though I know theory pretty well (well, knew theory pretty well in college).

So! My technique is nonexistent, my theory is good, and I think I basically just need a lot of time playing. Eventually I'd REALLY like to move to vibes.

Anybody know anyone good? Oh. And cheap?

How about some Fats Waller and Thelonius Monk records? Nina Simone, too.

There's a guy named Mike Stegner who's teaching at a music school up there. Mike's a stupid-good player and I would assume an excellent teacher. I'll try to find out the name of the place he's teaching. I think it's just North of downtown. Tell him I sent you.

Creative Music Adventures in the Greenlake area of Seattle, WA. To schedule lessons here, call them at 206.683.6113

For anyone else who cares, they have an excellent bass teacher named Forrest Giberson and a smokin' drummer teaching there named Eric Hastings.

Cool, good luck! I am doing the same thing on the other coast. I bought a Yamaha digital and started taking lessons last week. If it helps for a benchmark, I am paying $30/hour and the teacher comes to my place.

Have you checked out this guy's books?

He also has this one! I have both of these and they have kept me very busy!

If you can't find a teacher, buy Hanon's exercises for the virtuoso pianst - do those and learn the proper fingerings for scales in all 12 keys. Those things will get you far by yourself.

Wow. Thanks for the tips, Chris. I've been considering taking some drum lessons.

No problem, guys. These dudes are some of my favorite people in the world, but don't believe anything they tell you about me. Lies, it's all lies.

Eric has a website: www.erichastings.com
I'm not sure about Mike and Forrest, but they're very involved in the NCM East label: www.ncmeast.com

I recommend listening to The Jongleurs and The Morpholinos.

My best friend is a piano teacher locally, and he has been taking jazz lessons from someone he really like. I'll fetch the name for ya.

** Hi Jack warning**

Any chance people can ask around for a jazz guitar teacher in the north north end. Like between Everett and Mount Vernon.
I've been doing them in Seattle and its just too damn far to drive.

Thanx!
