They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-haaa!

Post by Kilroy » Thu Jan 27, 2005 12:31 pm

Remember when you ran away
And I got on my knees
And begged you not to leave
Because I'd go berserk?
Well. . .

You left me anyhow
And then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone
Completely out of my mind
And. . .

Hee hee, ho ho, to the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time...

Who was that guy anyway? He wore the mask on the album and wasn't he supposed to be some heavy duty industry insider?

There was one time we were driving around boston, and on like Emmerson College radio or something, a guy was playing all the covers and spin-off's of that song he could find. It was never ending, and I loved it, but the bitch had to change the station. Ugh, what a classic. Done with tape loops, too.

Somewhere, there's a John Lennon quote, where he says something like "Rain, that was the first song with back words. I was the first to put in back words music. I guess there was They're Coming To Take Me Away, but that was differnt I was the first." John Lennon, he was one of the beatles.

How come the Beach Boys never made an anotholagy???

I wish it were a requirement that all bands had to make an anothology 25-30 years later. And I mean EVERY one, from Ah Ha the the Silver Apples.

And even Morton Sobotnik and Judy Collins.[/i]

Yep, it is.
That one was the gift of God - of Jah, actually, the god of marijunana. Jah gave me that one. The first backwards tape on any record anywhere. Before Hendrix, before the who, befor any fucker. Maybe there was that record about 'They're coming to take me away, ha ha'; maybe that came out before 'Rain' but it's not the same thing...

***That song was done by the producer Kim Fowley, "the source of all things musical":

http://www.kimfowley.net/

A true lunatic, he features prominently in the documentary on Rodney Bingenheimer, "The Mayor of Sunset Strip", which is very worth seeing. It's an interesting musing on the nature of celebrity, entertainment, families... and America. Rodney B. is an interesting figure: superfan, celebrity, a kind and haunted person too. A Zelig-like figure, as it says on the box; an outsider who becomes an insider who becomes an outsider, and remains both.

Yup, those are great. I collect Super K stuff, and at first glance you think "what a bunch of hacks, can't even put a real song on the b-side", but then you realize they just put 2:30 of backwards backing tracks on the b-side of a million-selling single, and then put their names on it as writers and collected all the royalties for doing almost nothing! Plus it allowed them to ration more good songs as A-sides, thereby maximizing profit. Kasenetz-Katz are my heroes.
