"Can't you just use a plug-in"?
"Can't you just use a plug-in"?
This seemed to be the question of the day asked by yesterday's client, being that he asked it for almost everything we did.
Instead of doing things right from the get-go, it seems some people are relying on plug-ins to fix the f-ups more and more.

i've noticed this as well.
what really bugs me is when someone tracks through a plug-in.
call it one of my prejudices.

If it sounds good why not?
that is "IF" it sounds good.
I feel like plug-ins are getting a bad rep through abuse and misuse. They dont put themselves up.

I dont hate plug ins, but I think they are viewed as an easy way out, sometimes.
There are instances where they are very helpful, and work great.
But you are right, IF it sounds good, then hey, why not.

Yeah, my first crutch when I began to record seriously was relying way too much on plugins, even tracking through them occasionally (bad bass sounds?...throw the MasterQ bass amp preset on there!). But still...even after I got some halfway decent gear and began to really focus on mic placement and such, I still turn to something like my Vintage Warmer because it is an amazing comp that does something different than my other comps. And the Voxengo stuff never dissapoints.

Re: "Can't you just use a plug-in"?
I used to use lots of plugins to make things sound "better", but you know what? I've learned that a good sound being tracked makes a HUGE difference in the final sound which requires very little amount of plugins.
These days, I have to battle clients that automatically want me to fix their f-ups digitally rather than make an effort to play their parts right. I like to tell them to pretend that we're tracking to tape and don't have the digital editing options. That usually works.

I'm liking my outboard effects much better than any plugin I have used.
