Anyway, I like the 635. I use it on everything. I really don't want the price of these to go any higher than it already is. I bought mine at least a year ago and paid less than $50 for it. I hate to even mention it. But it is seriously such an awesome mic; it does so many things well. It sounds like a champ on snare.

If you are talking about the EV 635a isn't that an omni? Wouldn't that pick up tons of hit hat?

well, like everything, it just depends. A really good drummer who is light with the right hand, the 635a sounds great.

409's are selling for crazy money these days, too bad I missed the boat there.

has anyone used both a 609 and a new 906 to compare? wondering what the real (ie, not marketing) difference is between the two, havent ever heard a 906.

dull and lifeless is a pretty awesome quality for a dynamic mic to have if you use it in conjunction with other microphones. Just a thought...

Wow...a hundred whole bucks?

Great to see all you guys again!

I see Brooklyn in the house tonight.... Brother Joel "Ape Attack" Hamilton. Break out the fuses, boys and never mind the meters. Don't buy your ice cream from the ice cream trucks and most of all, remember that the lines you see in the road are only mere suggestions. Wink

Ok, onto the topic.

I bought a 609 a long while back for use on guitars. I never loved it for that in the studio but love it for guitars live...wierd. I did, however, find the 609 to be a great snare mic in my particular situation. So much so that it became the go-to snare mic on most of my band's whole last record.

And now that I think about it, we did a friend's record here and the 609 was the go-to for his particular guitar sound. The guy even used my amp. Just goes to show you subjective this stuff all is.

A note on the 635A... add me to the list of lovers of this particular mic. Just a cool microphone for lots of different things. Definitely don't buy into the jacked up prices on this mic though. I paid $50 and at $50 bucks it's a great deal that no one should ever regret picking up.

Damn. I'm at a loss. Anybody here ever try those Kel Audio Mics? if they're a third as cool as advertised they may be a great deal. I admit, I've eyed 'em up. I could see something like those things maybe being great expendables if nothing else. Want the old 87 on the toms sound without the threat of a clobbering? Might be your man. Room mics? Outside Kick Drum? I dunno...anyways.

Man...I used to be so much better at this "under $100 bucks" game. I think I might be turning snob. *sigh*

Oh well, fuck it ya poor slobs. Twisted Evil Confused Laughing Wink

I paid $65. I feel gypped. I'm happy though, I do use it quite a bit.

Can you get a Shure 545 for under $100? I believe so. Anyone got any insight into those babies? I was reading a making of Pet Sounds book and apparently Brian Wilson used to use them for his leads. They may be on the re-recorded smile too.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned these yet but, the Audix i5 is pretty solid for the cash. I found two of them on ebay for about sixty bucks a piece used. The last time my kid brother's band played together I used one of them to mike the Hiwatt combo my brother has been playing through. Once he got his copy of the practice, he made sure to let me know not to lose the mic I was micing his amp with. That's a pretty ringing endorsement in my book. If anyone is interested, I'll might try putting a song up from the band practice.

the new metallica record is THE balls.

they used a $325 vocal mic, so probably OT for this thread.

I think I got my 664 for $35, and I've been surprised as hell how much I've been using it. I really dig it for strummy acoustic guitar tracks.

I joined in this thread way late, but I'd like to mention the RE15 if someone hasn't already. Can be found used for about $60 - $80. Great guitar cabinet mic. Not too bad on some vocalists either. From what I understand on the Stones' "Brown Sugar" it was an RE15 on a Fender Twin for Keith's guitar.

Regarding the AT2020 - I may be wrong, but I don't think it's actually got a large diaphragm.
