i am recording drums using 451's as overheads - is there a benifit to using the -10 pad?

also - i am having a hard time hearing the difference between the 2 mics - they are about 4 ft apart but sound like the same mic in the mix.

thoughts?

How far are the mics from the kit? How much are they splayed apart?

Remember the 3:1 rule if you are using a spaced pair.

I almost always use the -10 pad when recording a loud drummer, with 451s I have the old ones not the reissues and I'd rather use the pad than risk distorting the mic and screwing up a take.

ABOUT a foot above the crash cymbals - about 4 ft apart

Remember the 3:1 rule if you are using a spaced pair.

there's no phase problems.

I usually use -20 pads with 451s. There's a difference in sound, not just a safety measure. See Analog Electric's recent thread on the subject.
