how quiet can your record 24bit?

Post by the velour fog » Thu Nov 10, 2005 2:30 pm

i remember reading that you don't have to record as loud with 24bits than if you were recording 16bit. but how low is too low? right now i'm using a tascam 388 and dumping tracks over to the computer via an echo layla 24. though everything is sounding good, and pretty loud for the most part, i'm concerned about the levels in the computer. they seem way too low, with loud passages and the 388 cranked...i'm still only getting up to -15db or so. not even close to zero. do i have to boost the tracks between the 388 and the layla?

I've been reading an assload about this lately. I'm just repeating shit I've read but in short, you're fine.

here's what started my reading about it:

read the posts by chris cavell and then follow the links posted by a guy named Shan. some of it might be PT specific but most is just about DA/AD crap.

are you using the laylas soft mixer to bring the levels up?

you should be fine though. the way it works is the bit rate lowers at lower volumes, BUT the different between 16 to 24 is exponential so its big enough to leave you comfortable at lower levels. just a wild guess but at -15 db you might be using 21bit or something (maybe).

bitrate = resolution
