Live sound gear?

Post by musikman316 » Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:24 pm

I've been running sound lately for my friends band and they need a couple channels of compression for there PA. Not coming from the live world I was wondering what compressor you guys would choose for a live vocalist (high baritone/clean vocal). The music is pop music with a lot of guitar textures and distorted bass. DBX 266? RNC? The budget is $200 or under.

Thanks,
Josh

I use an Art Pro Vla on the vocal buss when I mix bands live.

using comps on the inserts when you mix monitors from the front of house position can lead to problems, so I compress the vox subgroup. The Vla sounds awesome on vocals - and its almost within your budget!

Look for a used dbx 166. not 166XL or 266, just 166. You should be able to find one around $100, good little stereo compressor. It's rack mounted which is a big plus for me when it comes to live gear you are going to be lugging around.

as lame as they are, you could always try a Alesis 3630.

but if your looking for something wicked easy and mindless: Art Tube Pac

You should be able to find a used DBX 1066 for that price. I'm quite fond of them for live work. Lots of knobs to tweak, and lots of blinky lights to quickly help you figure out what going on when stuff goes wrong.

Thanks,
