First off, the synth sound... I don't have a copy handy to check at the moment, but I'd take a shot that a lot of the synth stuff was guitar synth - Andy Summers did a lot of synth guitar.

I've done a bit of bass recording with doubled bass guitar and electric upright, and it's a pretty interesting sound. Because the wavelengths are so long you actually get enough phase cancellation to get a bit of a chorousing/flanging effect between the two different tracks. Plus there are the different attack/decay sounds of the two instruments. Great for reggae.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the synth was a Synclavier. That thing is all over so much of those records.

either a fairlight or synclavier... sting was the synclavier guy and stewart was the fairlight guy, right? something like that. i think they fought over which to use alot.
