When the band gets to the line about "I been this way since 1956" I always wonder if they're going to change it to "1996". To my way of thinking, this is hip. To say "1956" is to sing the song like an imagination-starved robot.
What about taking this license to re-word things? Is there a purist perspective?

I did that when I performed the song...I think I either said '86 or '96. Either way it was kinda true at the time...
Playing in a cover band, very often you get bored and start rewriting the lyrics while you're singing 'em. It can get downright obscene if you're not careful. No one listens to the words anyway.
