MAKE magazine has posted a challenge from a reader--to make an amp, say for headphones, that automatically adjusts the volume level according to the amount of ambient noise the listener is in. Somebody here should be able to do this, right?

I'm guessing you could do it with a little mic on each side of the headphones, which would be fed into a sidechain, which adjusts the volume independently on each ear. If it were me, and I wasn't using the headphones for studio usde, I would also have the sidechain adjust a simple compressor or limiter, so when things got louder around me, my headphones would seem louder, without raising the actual volume as much.
Just my $.02

Whoa, wait a minit. MAKE is the shizzinit! Every time I get stuck at Barnes and Noble lately with my wife, I find the latest issue and dig in. It's kind of like a Tape Op for EVERYTHING, with DIY projects that will blow the mind. The current issue has a fine and very long feature on circuit bending and modification of little battery-powered Casio keyboards. Yeah.
