Coverting a Hammond L100 series to a tube guitar amp

Post by caz » Wed Nov 23, 2005 8:09 am

TapeOppers,

Has anyone ever pulled the tube amp section out of an old 60s spinet organ and successfully converted it into a instrument amp?

Or are there any good links to visit?

check the schematic for the input impedance of the amp - I think its close to line level as it is. There must be an easy way to do this - plus, you can scrap out that great Jensen speaker and use that too!

Has anyone performed such a conversion? Or is there any thing on the web about it?

you need to check input impedance and adjust the circuit accordingly; you might want to throw a tone control circuit in there somewhere too if there isn't one already.

ultimately, organ amps are designed to be as clean as possible. the output transformer might even be ultralinear, and i'd suggest modifying the circuit so that the screens get their supply from the B+, not from the transformer (or you could make it triode, but that is another story). it would be fun to mess around with the circuit and see what it can do.
