1- So there is a rack "and" a rack/desk option for the 002?
answered above. Yeah.

Quote:

2- If so, I presume it would be better for "me" to get the rack only and use my old desk, right? Or is the 002 desk not really the same thing as my Soundtracs desk?

The 002 desk is not a mixing desk like your Soundtracs. It's just a controller, no audio passes through the faders. Think of it more as a large, articulated mouse and you're more on target. You could get the 002 controller or Control8 and still run your Protools outputs through your Soundtracs board, if you like. Using the controller allows you to automate levels in ProTools without using a mouse and clicking on the rubberbands.

Quote:

3- Is the command8 just the newer version of the 002 desk? Why are you all saying that the old rack and new comand8 are a good pair over the 002 rack/desk?

Command8 is not a newer version of the 002 desk, it's just a newer control surface...the Command8 doesn't replace anything so much as it provides a control surface to people who have 002-rack models, 001s, MBoxes, or full-blown systems...IOW, ProTools rigs that don't already have a control surface.

I'm saying the rack 002 and command8 is better than the 002 desk because the Command8 is more sturdily built and has more well-thought-out ergonomics than the 002 desk. The 002 rack is still the same good-quality I/O interface that the 002 desk has, but you add the C8 to the rack and you've got a better overall rig.

Thans, I get it now. I love this message board! I think I'm interested in the 002 rack, but I'm not sure I'd be into digital recording if I couldn't use all my analog hardware... I know you can, but I mean I have a 24 ch. board and the 002 looks like it only has 8 in/outs. Does this mean I'd be forced to mix in the box if I have more then 8 tracks recorded?

You could add an external D/A for an additional 8 analog outputs through the lightpipe out.

Right. 16 or 24 bit. Can also go 44.1kHz.

So the 002 limits you to 8 tracks if you like to work outside of the box?

In terms of built in outputs, yes. But you can get an additional 8 by adding a third party box with ADAT input and additional converters; and 2 more with a similar box using S/PDIF input. Same goes for the inputs.

Of course, then you'd have to sync the two, probably slaving the other converter box to the 002; and then you're also stuck with 48.1k or less, as was mentioned. I don't use ProTools that much, do people actually do this often (use an 002 with a third party box to add channels through the lightpipe in)?

All the time, no big deal at all.

Out of pure curiousity, what box[es] do you use with it?

My brother is mixing his record at a place where they have ProTools LE, on a 002 rack, and they bring all 32 tracks out to a mixer thusly: 8 out of the 002, 8 more out of a lightpipe breakout box, and they port the remaining 16 tracks to one of those newer ADATs that plays off a hard drive instead of tape..meaning they actually move the files to the other machine and then sync the machines up. It's not literally playing everything off ProTools, but it gets them 32 tracks through the faders. Seems to work okay.

Wow, well even just doubling the 002s 8 in/out to 16 would be fine for me, but cutting the quality by half doesn't sound like a good trade off. Am I correct in assuming that my sound quality would be half going down to 48.1? Here is whare I show more lack of understanding of using digital in place of my tape machine. Wink

First of all, the sample rate is 48kHz or 44.1kHz, not 48.1. That being said, the difference in sound quality between 96k and 48k is not half. The difference will be subtle for sure. In fact, many records are being made every day with a 44.1kHz sample rate. That is my main format, 24 bit, 44.1kHz. Although 96kHz sampling rates offer slightly better sound quality, they also consume 2 times the CPU and Disc resources. That is a big drawback on native systems. You will not be able to run near as many plugins on a 96k session.

Products like the Focusrite Octo-Pre or Octo-Pre-LE will give you an additional 8i/o. There are also a lot of products out there that will just give you an extra 8 inputs, like the Presonus DigiMax series.

I mix in the box, so I am not concerned with having additional outputs. I use a Panasonic/Ramsa WZ-AD96M to give me an additional 8 inputs to my 002-Rack system.

Yeah, to me not being able to go above a 48 kHz sample rate isn't a big limitation. All of my sessions lately are ar 44.1 kHz, 24-bit. The 16-bit vs. 24-bit is a bigger deal in my opinion when tracking/mixing than the sample rate. If it's going to CD it'll end up at 44.1 kHz eventually anyway.
