Drum Recording/Micing Technique Extravaganza?

Post by T-rex » Sat Dec 24, 2005 6:53 am

It seems that 2 out of every 3 topics in recording techniques deals with recording drums in one aspect or another. I think most people will agree that there is an art to recording a live drumset well and that is something I think most people, including myself, struggle with doing well on a consisten basis..

So what about a drum recording extravaganze workshop? Maybe a continuing thing across the two days or one day dealing with things like:

Drum recording with minimal mics
Drum recording with multiple mics
Recording rock drums
Recording Jazz trio or ensemble drums
Recording in large rooms
Recording in bedrooms
Recording the guy who bashes the cymbals and barely hits the toms

For instance many people record in crappy small rooms and close mic everything to take the room out of the equation. Then they have 10 mics, all in questionable relations of phase. It seems most of the time that is worse than throwing up three mics and going for it?

Just some suggestions, please throw any ideas out you may have. I know in the past (which unfortunately I haven't been able to attend) there is always a band recording, and I think recording the drums in a band context is good, but I think this subject could really use it's own emphasis.

The Pot Luck studio will once again address these issues. You really should attend to see what we are doing there!

Yeah, well that is the plan this year! I am hoping to be there, it's a bummer that the first year I will be able to go is after the whole New Orleans disaster.

I spent more time in the Pot-Luck studio than anywhere else last year.

The best and easiest path I have found found for drums is 3 mics run into good preamps. It's not popular to put the emphasis on the gear, but I know that I could never go back to recording drums with a cheap microphone preamp, unless it was for an effect.

Tuning drums is just as, if not more important then placing microphones around 'em.

Here, Here! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Here's my vote for getting our illustrious General Recording Moderator Tony SanFillippo back in the hot seat for another, expanded drum mic'ing session, plus some more fancy guest stars to boot!

I'll do it if they'll have me!

Thanks for the vote of confidence.
