I have an MS-16 and it's rack mounted on to an angled mixing rack. What model is the machine you're trying to find info on?

Lotta them machines had rack ears so you could put them in a standing rack, or a roll away cart sorta thing. I know both of my Scully's are built this way, and I remember the last time Leroy Bach had his MS-16 here it was made the same way. Leroy's had a rack mount transport and a rackmount box of electronics...

I don't think there is any +/- to having either the rackmountable or the all in one unit except maybe if you just have to take in the meter part or the actual recording unit to get serviced.
It's a cool machine, the Pixies did Come on Pilgrim on it or maybe Surfer Rosa..

I think www.audiovillage.org has a few of them and an expensive remote.

Here's the "washing machine" version, mine has two seperate pieces, the recorder and the meter component with the bias cards etc...

Yeah, John...we screwed up and let the url lapse in the time when I took control of the place. If you google up "clava studio" you can find us through a link at the Perishable Records site. You can also find us at:

www.4deucesrecording.com

We changed the name (for tax purposes among other reasons) when I assumed control. It's still Clava Studio, but the state of Illinois knows the business under the name 4 Deuces Recording.

The web site is crap, frankly, and much in need of an update. Just haven't gotten around to working on that. It hasn't hampered business too bad...we're too busy with other customers right now for me to finish some project work that I'm trying to do...

EDIT: I get it now...I had the old url in my profile. I just changed it. Thanks for the heads up!

The MS16 is a rackable all-in-one unit.
Tascam used to make a 1" 16 called 86-16B that was more washing-machine sized, but it's electronics were rackable, essentially. The transport sat atop a custom rack unit...

I wouldn't say that I'm in love with it but I really like my MS-16.
It has balanced XLR (+4dB) and unbalanced RCA (-10dB) i/o. My MS-16 has a dbx noise reduction unit on which you can engage different tracks individually. That's really useful because at 15ips with 456 it's a bit noisy without the noise reduction.
Mine came with a remote control but I find it's a bit of a hassle to punch in acurately.
It can be taken appart and then it's small enought to fit into a car if you have to take it somewhere.
I had to do this more often then I wanted to because I don't have a real studio at the moment.
I bought mine for about $1200 on ebay and I think that's a realistic price. Mine is in a great condition, I only had to replace the pinch roller and a NAB-adapter.
I did not regret that I bought it and as I said above I really like it.
