I need a D.I. or two. Most likely one passive and one active.
Are there major sonic differences between the Countryman and lets say the Radial JDI passive? I was always under the impression that the Countryman was the industry standard, now I'm starting to see the Radial name more often in gear lists.

So are the Radial boxes an improvement to the Countryman? Or are they just different? Is the difference subtle or obvious? Can anyone give me any descriptions or comparisons on the subject.
Maybe I'm over thinking the issue and should just buy one and use it.
Reason for asking is in my last trip to the studio we a/b the Avalon direct thing against the bass sans amp. The sans amp was obviously better, and cost a lot less. Yes I know they are different animals, however they are still both direct boxes. If I could only have one for bass I would go with the less expensive sans amp hands down. So I thought someone here could give me an opinion with a similar experience. Not necessarily just for bass though.

Don't forget about the Red Eye! It's DI section sounds great and compares very favorably to the other high-end DI's on the market, Countryman included, but of course that's a matter of opinon and application. But the Red Eye is also a Re-Amp box, so it is much, much more useful, though it costs a little more.

The Radial J48 is an improvement of the Countryman 85. It beats it, but only by a little bit. They are pretty damn close.

Read the manual for the Radial J48 Active. It will explain exactly why. Better than I could write in a few minutes.
