Noisy-ass EH 12AY7

Post by curtiswyant » Sat Jan 28, 2006 7:00 pm

Got my EH 12AY7 pre yesterday. I get a nasty hum when running it into an unbalanced line-in on my 388. I've used both XLR->TS (unbalanced) and XLR->TRS (balanced) cables. The only way to avoid hum/noise is to run the pre inline with the 388 pres...this method is an improvement, but probably not as good as running the pre straight through. Any suggestions?

E-H 12AY7 XLR out

Post by eh91311 » Sat Jan 28, 2006 8:40 pm

This unit's XLR out must go to a balanced line in so as not to hum. The 388 doesn't have that, so you either have to run it to the XLR mic pre in or to the unbalanced line in using a XLR-to-1/4 transformer. As far as which is worse, the 388's mic pres or line in+transformer, can't tell ya.

Yeah, been there. You find out in a hurry what's really balanced when you start trying to hook up the EH pre. Don't send it back though; it ain't busted (if you can find a true balanced in to get you to the 388)

I've got an Aphex 124a for that kind of stuff. It has 2 channels unbalanced in to 2 balanced out and another 2 balanced ins that it converts to unbalanced outs. It's a high quality unit and I've got no complaints. They sell new for $200, but due to their low demand, you can probably find one on ebay for more like $50, I did anyway. Nice tool to have around...
Good luck!
