Uses for cheap tube pres

Post by bplr » Wed Feb 01, 2006 7:44 pm

I just realized while posting the last message how much I hate my DBX 376. Does anyone know of a good use for this one or other crappy tube pres? Is there a simple mod for these guys? Recommended tubes to swap?

Line level limited bandwidth clipper?

That is what the ART tube MP does for me very well.

You mean bussing certain frequencies to it and hitting it really hot? That's not a bad idea. How do you set it up, just run out through a nice parametric eq and sweep it till you hit the sweet spot or something? Shit I'm gonna try that.

The Art MP is also a nice guitar/bass effects box. Insert in a loop, or just plug the instrumennt right in.

door stops?

If they have rubber feet you could put them under your monitors to isolate them. . .

The door stop idea was what I was told about drum machines a few years back. Guess what. . .they're back! Whatever you do, hold onto that crap! Everything comes full circle! lol

If you have better tube gear
you could use the cheap stuff
as a warmer for back- up tubes
during a session. Better gear
seems to be more responsive
to tube "rolling". Could save on
down-time.

I use my cheapo Presonus BlueTube as a DI box. Run it pretty much at unity, but sometimes with a little tube action, and it does the jub.

i have two differently modded bellari mp105s. i find them to be super useful limited bandwidth built in limiting and distortion boxes...

i think they sound great on a lot of stuff... rock vocals.. acoustic guitars... anything where a little grunge is cool.

i like cheap stuff due to cheapness. as in, for $40 a pop, these little bellaris dont even make a bottom line impact on my studio budget.

I simply line through my Bellari Mp110. I did the chip mod and it has an RCA 12AX7 in it. Pretty warm overall. I use it for a bit of thickening and essentially re-record something from Pro Tools through the line side. Onerous to do the sample shift back in Pro Tools and then consolidate the region again, but it's worth it for just a bit of harmonic drive.

Yes, I've done this with the Bellari too and it excelled in this function as a bass DI. Actually, turned heads in the studio with the tone.
