Any Shure SM5B Users Out There?

Post by A-Barr » Mon Jan 30, 2006 10:06 pm

I picked one of these up at a studio yard sale:

Anyone in here using one of these? From what I've googled, this is a very popular broadcast mic but nobody seems to use it for music and apparently it's never been mentioned on these boards. Personally, I like it. I use it on acoustic guitars and amps for a smooth, natural sound, like a 57 but with more presence and a more filled-out response ...sort of. It can sound a little boring on solos, but seems nice for rhythm stuff.

Just curious if anyone else is in to these, any opinions?

I think that's the SM7 predecessor.

You might get some decent cash for it if you are not blown away by it.

Good to know! I was always curious if there was a connection. Their frequency responses look pretty different so I imagine they have different capsules, though for their purpose I'd say they're in the same boat. As to the cash, I think I paid 75 for it and I saw it on ebay for 150, so not a whole lot of dough to be made there. Maybe we can hype it enough in the forums that I'll get a bigger profit margin...

Seriously though, it's my precious little secret weapon and I'm keepin' it.
