Some advice

Post by NU-TRA » Thu Feb 09, 2006 10:26 am

I did a search on this forum about both of these. I'm looking for dedicated rock drum overheads mics. I've narrowed it down to The Josephsons C42 and the Groove Tubes Gt44... I am close micing everything... Looking to get a nice rocking cymbal and some drum sound to blend into the close miced kit.
I know the GT mic is discontinued but I've read good things... The C42 seems to be everyones pick as well

Any thoughts or experiences would be helpful.. Oh The overheads would be going through Hardy twin jensen preamps which has a larger than life clean sound.

if you like a "vintage" "smooth" "rolledoffhighs" cymbal/overhead sound..I would try a ribbon like the beyerm160 or octava ml-19..or any other quality ribbon mic..might be a great combo with the J. Hardy..

I have been a big fan of Groove Tube mics for a long time. I have a pair that I use for drum room mics and they sound great.

Have you tried them for overheads?

i don't use any gt 44's or anything.. but i alwasy set up a gt 66 as an ambience mic and i get grade a quality from them.

i'd trust anything by groove tube.

I have used them for overheads. They work well there also. But the GT5s I have tend to have a better bottom end so I like using them in the Room to pull some extra kick into the set.

For overheads I generally use a pair of AKG 414s or 451s and am very happy with those.

I have the newer 451's and I don't like them for overheads much since they are too brite.

The 451s can be bright. I tend to run them through our Euphonix console pres. Darkens em up quite a bit. Also our room is on the dark side right now so they counteract that. As with everything YMMV.
