I have and Audix D6 Microphone that I use for kick drum. I am having trouble getting the attack that I feel that I should be getting without EQ. I have used the AKG D112 before and they just seem to pick up a lot more attack. Anybody have any suggestions for the D6 or should I just purchase a D112? Thanks for your help.

It's my personal experience that mic placement with the D6 will have an affect on the attack and tone.
More beater for rock? Move it inside and point it at the beater. More of jazz kick? Move it out to about 2 inches in front.
Experiment and see what happens!

I've only heard great things about the D6. What positions have you tried?

when i use the d6, i almost always find i have to use
another mic on the kick as well. i get the attack with
the d6 inside the kick, then use a large diaphram
condenser on the outside to get the body.

with the D6 you will usually fiind the most attack up close to the head, and pointing at the point of beater impact. At least that's my experience (I have 2 x D6's).

If you want A LOT of attack try a Beta91. I personally have never been a fan of the D112.

Are you guys referencing these comments with respect to adding an eq in the record path or without? No matter what kick drum mic I use, I don't see myself recording it without eqing it to really bring out the natural qualities of the mic's build.

that depends on the sound you are looking for of course. I think the D6 can produce a usable sound "as is" with the correct placement, mic pre, drum heads, etc. but that's me. Sometimes, I add EQ, compression, gating, etc to change the sound depending on the tune.
so I guess the answer is Yes and No...

Thanks for all the input. I have tried it a couple different positions. I have put it just about 2inches in the sound hole and I have tried it about 2 inches of the head as well. Part of it may be the room as well. Thanks again.
