Telefunken V672 (discrete version) vs. V72

Post by Coco » Wed Feb 15, 2006 1:13 pm

Looking for some comparasins between Telefunken V672 discrete version, not A or D ect. and Telefunken V72. I am looking for attributes, what each excells on, faults ect. I will be getting a pair of either one or the other so I am looking for a quick over run of the two. I realize I am comparing a transistor pre to a tube pre and this purchase is not a necessity. I did a search and found a few tidbits, but nothing too full of information. I just need 2 channels of extra flavour. Thanks.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

Mystery and magic (V72) vs. solidity and faithfulness (V672).

Both are right for certain applications, but the V72 is the precious pre.

Thanks Jeff. I do need a bit of mystery in my life. I have 6 ch of nice solid state pres and 2ch of nice tube pres at the moment. Like I mentioned in my original post, I am not needing a certian type of pre right now, just something to add to the rack. I might go for the V72 since I have an empty lunchbox and am considering putting some discrete pres in there in the near future. More comments please.

I've got a pair of the V672's that Oliver racked at Tab, and they are very, very nice, but I have no V72 experience to compare them to.

They have a lot of high end sparkle, but don't have the low end boom of say the Great River. They can really sound nice on some vocals, although some female and high tenor males can sound a bit thin.

I love them for drum OHs!!! :)
