I totally know what you mean about Taylors. The one I have is really old, it's from their Lemon Grove plant (early days) and i really like it. It's actuallya 12 string that i bought with a busted truss rod for $250 and put a new neck on and something about the 12 string bracing and the 6 string neck gives it more body than the average Taylor. Anyway, I like it but all i do all day is fantasize about owning an old Gibson. I get night sweats dreaming about having an old Hummingbird or a J 160 like Lennon's.

But i digress. The thing i wanted to tell you is that i got my ADK for $250 from that guy on Craigslist New York. He's some sort of broker for them or something and he's on there all the time selling ADKs. I don't know if taht's less than they usually go for, but i felt taht it was a very fair price for the mic- it's basically become my main vocal mic until i save up for the Soundelux (which I'm buying after I get that Gibson).

Brill,

i know what you mean about the J160...but have you checked out the Epi version? I have a Gibson, but i will always be an Epi freak..i love them guitars for what they are, but im always surprised for how good they are! my masterbilt DR500ME gives a Martin D16 a run for its money...i think it wins too. im only selling it cause i need a rosewood guitar. too many mahogony around here at this point.

Epi is frigging great if you ask me...i have an FT165 from the 70's, 12 string goodness..im sure not as good as yours but, damn this thing sings for a laminate (heavy as hell) guitar...block inlays all over the neck, just gorgeous...Epis are great to look at...their dove is a really good looking guitar.

the Epi J160E is very good...lots of folks have both not to take their gibby on the road, and say they're very close...the original lennon one was utter crap. all laminate so it wouldnt feedback as hell, but acousticly very bad guitar...im sure you know this...only the first runs of that guitar are trully great...like the first year or something..but it was a les paul concept and the little fella didnt want to have anything to do with that...he clearly asked for an all laminate or he would quit developing it..so like 1000 or something were made all solid and gorgeous (nowadays worth many thousands) and the rest of the runs (several decades) were nothing but a very good looking guitar that sounded like crap. they have colectors value cause of the time and whats involved in the concept, but they do sound like crap. nowadays it's basically a J45 with a P90...very good guitar i bet. you have excelent taste ;) i myself prefer going with the Epi version (soon) and owning a true J45 one day...from the 50's probably...sunburst of course!

dang..sorry... but if u get me going about gibson and epi...

sorry.

the hummingbird is soooo sweet...and cheap used as well (ive seen really good ones going for 1800 bucks...practically free in light of what they are)..just stay away from the whole block inlay ones..those are the norlin ones (unless u can play them before and they end up being very good...mine was, i didnt play it before and rolled the dice..i was very very lucky...norlin is bad, but it can also be extremely good..the southern jumbos from that era are usually outstanding)...adjustable bridges are also something u wanna run from...but that's something easily replacable. the new ones are great as well...but i long for a used hummingbird, same with the J45...the heavy coating wears off with time (several years :/ ) and you have a twice as good looking guitar than it was when new.. the bird is, for me, one of the best guitars ever...no mahogony cuts through like that one (when u catch a good one). i have this big plan. my J50 for live, J45 rosewood, hbird and a martin 00015 (ill be damned if im gonna pay what Guilds M20's are going for these days) for recording...

nice and cheap plan huh...

im always wondering if i need a D28 cause of neil...but dang, nothing like a gibson...i really really love my J50..i think only gibson can bring up that sort of weird feeling...i dunno...screw it, who cares..

hey i like your songs...you're lennon in disguise :) now i understand the J160 need a bit more...

craiglist..im sure its a good price...i can get it more or less for that you know...but as im in portugal, i have to deal with customs everytime :/ so itll end up the same...

but thanks!

ps. i hope you get your gibsons sooner than later.

funny thread because I have been fantasizing about a JE 160 alot recently. The appeal is the obvious Beatle thing but also I love that neck. Everytime I try the guitar though it sounds like a dog. I tried a 67' one yesterday and the giutar felt great but my little guild acoustic trumped the sound enormously.
I tried the Epi and thought it sounded just as bad as the gibson, but maybe they are both bad. I really like Epiphones alot and have a ES295 and Corina SG I love to bits so I wouldn't hesitate. I'm having to come to terms with how beatiful the JE160 looks and what a dog it sounds like. More proof that it's less the equiptment and more the players that will always make the diffrence in a recording. All Hail the Beatles

Obrigato, Dlago. i will gladly accept any and all Beatles, Badfinger or other artist on Apple records comparisons. That's exactly what i was going for.

You said a mouthful about gibsons and Epi's up there and I think you always have to try them out. I saw ana amazing looking old Gibson Everly bros. jumbo in London last year- I mean it was so gorgeous I heard angels singing- and it was, like, $6,000 or something and it was total crap. It was totally dead, no resonance at all. The again, my fiend Mike Viola (a super talented NYC songwriter) has an early 90's J 160e reissue that has a glued headstock- not really supposed to be an amazing guitar, but his is gorgeous.

My 2005 epi casino is my #1 favorite guitar.

nestle,

67 sounding real bad sounds about right..its supposed to..you're playing an all laminate wood guitar engineered not to feedback at stage level.. :/ the J160 Epis ive tried sounded better (imo) than the only gibby J160 i ever tried, but then again i didnt play them at the same time so i dunno. not stelar by any means, but a decent guitar nevertheless...overpriced of course, for what it is (the Epi).

i really like the ES295 too! with the P90's right? if they had that one in black i would be all over it. i have a weird Epi, an ES175, supposedly a very minor run, US made, very rare...i really like it...Gibson has no records of such guitar, or they dont want to admit it, wich i wouldnt be surprised by, but its def an epi, US made, and ive seen only 2 in several years (mine and this other one in england).

you're right about the players...lennon's J160 was a very crappy guitar indeed.

nice portuguese there Brill ;)

yep, u have to try them all, some gibbies are really bad guitars...especially from the norlin era, the 80's aint stelar either...quality picked up in the 90's, but even still..i think they're getting their act together now...2005/4...they're also changing the woods a lot, wich says something about avaliability..but as always, gems are everywhere, u just gotta dig in...i know mine falls into that category, and it's from the end of norlin's era...i have nothing to point out on this guitar, (for me) it's perfect. my japanese 12 string Epi from the 70's weights two times more wich in itself is kind of weird, cause norlin era instruments were made bulky and with all kinds of weird bracing, so they would last a long time and resist to whatever...i dunno if they expected gibsons to be used as axes or something, but they made them a lot bulkier, completely killing the ressonance and tone...mine aint, wich is weird coming from that era..

(i gotta shut up)

mxl V67G anyone?

Man the ES295 is just my favorite for so many reasons, it's insanely good, like it's own guitar, nothing like a gibson. I got it at a blow out sale for $400. I put grovers on it, screwed down the bridge and changed the switch (all epi's) and I'm good to go for years on this thing, so much fun. There is something about those P90's in particular, they are diffrent from other P90's. They are cleaner and when you turn up they give like a good compressor, like a 1176. I'm a guitar slut I admit it, I've got about 14 guitars and this one is up there as my possible #1.
